IDEAS HAVE POWER ## Uncle Sam Needs Your Ideas For VICTORY
Now is your chance to back seat drive, boys! The Soule' Salute wants to hear from you. This column is to be devoted to your ideas--any ideas, all ideas. Maybe it's only a suggestion for keeping scrap off the floor, but an uncluttered floor makes for faster movement, and time is the essence of Victory. Maybe your idea is a big one for changing the whole shebang; or maybe it is a small thing that is sending you off the beam. Whatever it is the Soule' Salute wants to hear about it and this space will be yours from here on out. Back seat drivers in a plant like ours often have ideas that promote progress by saving time and labor and consequently are of value.
Here's How The process of getting your idea to the editor is as simple as ABC. There will be suggestion boxes put up in convenient places. Right beside them will be pads of paper. Write your suggestion, put it in the box and keep the numbered stub as your receipt.
Prizes For Every Issue Each time the Soule' Salute goes to press FIVE DOLLARS will be awarded for each usable idea submitted. The ideas will be published by number and the winners must present the stub with corresponding numbers to collect the prize money.
Sky's The Limit All your suggestions will be noted in this column. Here's the way it will work: 1272: Tried this, found it interfered with "jeep" movement. 1296: Swell idea, but explain it more fully to qualify. 1301: Suggests that the metal piles be moved a foot and a half to the left to give the men more room. Wins $5. Bring the stub in, Pal.
Get the idea? No one knows who submits the ideas. You keep the stub with the number of your suggestion on it and if your number is listed as a winner take it to the editor in your plant and he'll fork over $5. The Salute wants your ideas for fixing anything from a tack on the track to a pain in the crane. GIVE, BOYS!
THANKS Thanks everybody for all the splendid ideas and suggestions you have given us. We used all that we possibly could. It is this type of cooperation that will keep the Salute doing its part for Victory.
Soule' Steel A Coastwide Institution With the attention of the entire nation focused on the Pacific Coast's gigantic industrial expansion, Soule' workers can be proud that their company is the only Coastwide concern in the steel fabricating field, with plants in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Torrance. The Soule' Salute in both pictures and news will endeavor to reflect the spirit of a Pacific Coast institution rather than limiting itself to one section.
Today with ONE PURPOSE—ONE CUSTOMER, devoting all effort and energy to the Common Cause, Soule' Steel looks forward hopefully to the days when it can again play a major part in the upbuilding of the Western Empire.

About Our People
“About Our People” is the heart of the Soule’ Salute. There will be separate sections for Los Angeles, Torrance, Portland and San Francisco. Get all the news you can about the people with whom you work to your editors. If an item you submit is not used immediately it will be because of lack of space, but it will be run in a later issue. The Salute goes to press this time with all personal stuff from the San Francisco gang, but in future issues Los Angeles, Portland and Torrance will come in for their full share. * * * Al Lowe, who used to be sales manager for Soule’, writes from the Army that he’s now managing the business end of a gun on sentry duty. What’s the pass word? “Mud,” he says. Only don’t try to pull that to get by Al. * * * Al Ott is practicing pacing the floor. He’ll be handing out cigars soon. * * *
GIVE and TAKE
The idea behind this column, which we hope will become a regular feature, is to make it snappy. Some spicy wise-cracks, timely jokes, a little kidding mixed in perhaps with a few harmless barbs—that’s what’s needed and it must come from YOU. So here’s your chance to get things off your chests, fellas— but let’s keep it constructive—interesting—entertaining. * * * If you fellows cut loose with a cuss word in the shipping office in San Francisco you are helping finance the war, in an odd sort of way. Rena Sagliola, that pert little miss who runs things around there will charge you one round dime per cuss, and don’t try passing off any new pennies. Rena is buying defense stamps with the money. Lucky she doesn’t wash out your mouths! * * * Shop men in San Francisco have a baseball team in the making and want to be identified as Soule’ Steel Company team. What they need is a good manager. They’ve been in there pitching for Soule’ all along, so they should be a red hot team. Is there a little Landis in the house? * * *
Soule’ Steel Company ## Now Engaged 100% ## In War Work
When the President designated the United States the “arsenal of Democracy” and called for the production of arms for the Allied Nations, Soule’ answered the call. More and more and larger and larger orders began coming in for “defense” material and Soule’ accepted them and turned them out in increasing amounts with increasing speed. That is why the Soule’ Steel Company was prepared to take its place with other war industries after Pearl Harbor. Its workers were trained, they were willing and anxious to take over more work—to do it better and faster. In the spring of 1942 Soule’ switched to actual ship building and in June of the same year the first Soule’ built landing craft was ready for action. Some day the full story of that action will be told. In the meantime four Soule’ plants are going full blast, turning out landing craft, seaplane wrecking barges, and other naval craft, davits for ships, steel bars and plates for shipyards, reinforcing steel for vital war needs, expanded metal for ship construction, steel window sash for war housing and let Hitler and Tojo guess what else and how many of them.
