Where do they come from? ## NEW PRODUCTS FROM SOULÉ

In three Research, Design and Development departments located in San Francisco, new Soulé products take shape for tomorrow's needs. Headed by Bob Pearson, Ian Miller, and Paul O'Brien, the men in these groups are responsible for designing new products and adapting our present products to meet new demands.

Steel Structures Division

When Paul O'Brien came to Soulé in 1963, his immediate assignment was to establish a complete research and development department for the Steel Structures Division. Today engineers, Ron Arehart, Walt Lang, Pete Heineman, John Kaskavalciyan, George Jee, Gloria Rodriguez, Herb Arceo and Ernie Clark work with him.

Some of the product innovations to come from this group are the new Temp-Con insulated wall panels for steel structures and the T-Hangar and Mainstreeter building lines.

Among the new systems Paul and his men have established are a system for processing steel structure orders, a computerized program for analyzing rigid frames and the standardization of existing steel structure products. Currently his department is developing a line of small steel buildings.

Architectural Products

Ian Miller heads the design department of the Architectural Products Division. Ian came to Soulé in 1957 as a designer and now has three men in his department; Herb Lange, Supervisor of Architectural Product Standards, as well as Al Bilund and Steve Skromeda.

These men are responsible for such new products as the Series 100 and 110 Architectural Aluminum railings, Series 491 Monumental Aluminum Sliding Doors, Series 300 Monumental Aluminum Sliding Windows and decorative aluminum screening material.

Ian's department also runs the hurricane test facilities and the static test chamber in San Francisco. They test all types of sealants and make prototypes of products for future production. They also do preliminary design work for bidding on contracts and follow through when contracts are received, preparing the new designs.

Plant Engineering

Bob Pearson who started with Soulé in 1956 as a design draftsman now heads the Plant Engineering department of the company's Manufacturing Department.

Under his direction, Hans Kirchner, Ernie Vevoda, George Scott and Trevor Shakesby serve as the general research center for the company, working for the divisions which do not have a research department of their own.

Bob's group is also responsible for company plant engineering, industrial engineering, tool and die design and the development of new production facilities.

Some of the new products or processes that Bob's department has had a hand in are the new clear and color anodizing facilities at the San Francisco plant, the new dome pans for the reinforcing division (they designed the tooling and manufacturing method), highway glare barrier products, sunshades made of Souléweave and the design and manufacturing methods of fence posts.

Currently, they are working on the development of a new Soulé Nailable Stud which they hope to introduce this year.

Vital Sales Tool

The men who make up the Research, Design and Development departments perform a vital function in keeping Soulé competitive in our fast, changing industry.

They also reflect a nation-wide emphasis on research which is best illustrated by the results of a current McGraw-Hill poll of manufacturing companies.

It showed that these companies expected 14% of their new year sales to come from either completely re-designed products or products which were still on the drawing boards!

In fact, 75% of consumer products on the market today were not in existence 10 years ago.

From the drawing boards and the imaginations of our research men, Soulé too, keeps pace with customer's endless needs for new and better products.

NAMES IN THE NEWS

Ian Ferguson has been appointed Director of Personnel headquartered at San Francisco, responsible for personnel in all Soulé offices. Before coming to Soulé, he was Assistant to the President of the Western Pacific Railroad Company.

Robert Weyand has been promoted to Sales Manager of the Southwest Region for the Steel Structures Division in Los Angeles. He is now in charge of dealer as well as direct sales activities in the Southwest.

Arnold Dunyan has been appointed to District Sales Manager, Reinforcing Products Division, in the Salt Lake City office. Formerly, he was a reinforcing product salesman in Los Angeles.

Lou Richer was appointed to Chief Estimator of the steel form department of the Reinforcing Division with headquarters at Los Angeles.

Sam Stevens is the new Production Scheduler in the San Francisco Anodizing Department.

Bob Rackerby has been promoted to Engineering Manager of the Architectural Products Division.

Bob Ford was promoted to Manager of Dealer Sales for the Architectural Products Division.

Bruce Tuck has been promoted to the new position of Manager of Distributor Sales for the Architectural Products Division. He will also continue to carrying out his current position of General Estimating Manager for the division.

Henry Moe is the new Field Supervisor of the Southwest District for the Architectural Products Division.

Bill Evans has become the Sales Manager of the new Temp-Con Panels for the Steel Structures Division in Los Angeles.

Paul O'Brien in San Francisco has been promoted to Manager of Production and Product Development for the Steel Structures Division. He is now in charge of the Los Angeles Plant in addition to Product Development.

Ron Arehart has been transferred to the Product Development Department of the Steel Structures Division at San Francisco as project engineer.

Felix Mazzocco from International Sales San Francisco was promoted to Sales Engineer at the Los Angeles Office for the Steel Structures Division.

Skip Wilkinson from San Francisco Sales has been promoted to new Dealer Representative in Portland for the Steel Structures Division.

Bill Bjorquist was appointed Sales Service Supervisor in the Steel Structures Division at San Francisco.

New to Soulé is Bob Edmonds, an Estimator in San Francisco Steel Structures Division.

Ray Paterson, Sales Trainee has become a salesman for the Architectural Products Division at Los Angeles.

Gary Asmussen was also appointed to the Sales department of the Architectural Products Division at Los Angeles.

Byron Todd was promoted to Production Foreman, Steel Structures Division in Los Angeles.

Luis Cisneros has joined the Los Angeles Steel Structures Division as a Time Study Engineer.

Dealers Sign 3-Year Franchises

The three year franchise is new this year. Other qualified dealers who have signed 3-year franchises are: Coastal Steel Structures, Ventura; Hawaii Welding Company, Honolulu; Modern Steel Structures, Modesto; W. J. Nicholson Company, San Jose; Republic Construction Company, Stockton; Romac Pacific Company, San Rafael and Stace Construction Company, Greenfield.

Ed Breeding At Lathing Convention

Ed Breeding from the LA office participated in a panel discussion recently at the Las Vegas convention of California lathing contractors, members of the Metal Lath Association. Along with his fellow panel members, he spoke to the contractors about the advantages of steel lathing systems. Breeding also gave them a list of systems to talk about on the subject of sound control and spoke about the importance of "word of mouth" selling.

PINTOGRAPHS BY BOB IVIE

*Photo: Bob Ivie, Senior Detailer for Steel Structures in San Francisco recently exhibited his Pintographs in San Mateo.*

If you don't know what Pintographs are, don't be embarrassed, because Ivie invented them. Essentially he says, it is a technique of using unexposed photographic film strips to which various texturing and coloring agents are applied. The results are interesting and colorful abstract compositions.

Bob has been working with this new technique for three years and hopes to have it patented. We look forward to seeing more Pintographs by Bob Ivie when he exhibits again in the Bay Area.

A.I.D. SUCCESS STORY

The recent Associated In-Group Donors campaign conducted in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area by Soulé employees produced double barrelled results. The total dollar amount pledged for 1966 is 100% over the pledges for 1965!

Employees formed the A.I.D. chapter in 1959. Each year since, the membership and dollar volume pledged has steadily increased. Congratulations to all participating employees and department and area captains on their fine job.

Beverly Boes, R.N., is the new Industrial Nurse at the Los Angeles Plant and Offices. Prior to joining Soulé, Beverly was employed by the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles.

Lewis Howell in Los Angeles has been promoted to Regional Sales Manager of the Southwest Region for the Commodity Products Division.

Bob Pearson, Plant Engineering Supervisor has been assigned the responsibility of Administrative Assistant to the Vice President-Manufacturing for the Anodizing Facilities in San Francisco.

Dick Brain has re-joined Soulé in San Francisco after a six-year absence. He is the new Production Planning Supervisor of the Architectural Products Division.

Neil Plumley in San Francisco has been promoted to Dealer Representative for the Coast Territory in the Steel Structures Division.

George Ness has joined the Architectural Products Division in San Francisco as a designer.

Herman Neff is a new salesman for the Reinforcing Division in Los Angeles.

Gary Beckman has joined the Commodity Products Division in San Francisco as a trainee for the Southwest Region.

Bob Short is a sales trainee for the Northwest Region of the Commodity Products Division in San Francisco.

LEE SOULÉ, JR. NAMED CO-CHAIRMAN

In an effort to be more effective in attempts to retain the California "Buy American Act" a Labor-Management Committee for California Jobs has been organized.

Edward Lee Soulé, President of Soulé Steel Co. has been chosen along with Joseph Angelo, Assistant District Director, District 38 of the United Steelworkers of America to serve as Co-Chairmen of this newly formed committee.

All segments of California industry will be united to serve on the committee and representatives of labor and management will participate in the activities.

The "Buy American Act" which protects products manufactured in the United States from unfair foreign competition is threatened with repeal in the next session of the California Legislature.

KLEMAN WINS AGAIN!

At his local club level, Frank won two trophies for the "Tall Tales Contest" and the "Serious Speech Contest." He then went on to win the same honors at the Division Championship on April 15.

Next he competes in his District Championship held in Santa Ana on May 14. With his record of victories behind him, he can't help but win!

Melting Crew Donates Blood

Manuel Ortiz's entire melting department crew at the Dominguez mill volunteered recently to help Ernie Garcia replenish our diminishing supply of blood in the company blood bank. Garcia's wife died in February.

TRUCK DRIVER— DOG HANDLER

Frank Bravo is a truck driver at the Dominguez mill. However when he's not on the job he is most likely working with his champion pug Bridget shown above. This picture was taken at a Santa Barbara show in 1964 which was Bridget's first major win. She returned in 1965 to sweep the pug ring again and to earn her title of Champion Betsy's Little Bridget. But Bridget isn't the only dog in Frank's life. There are three other pugs at home and a fifth dog, Frank describes as Gwendolyne "a lady of questionable lineage." We hope that the Bravo family shares Frank's enthusiasm!

OVER $7,500 FOR UNITED CRUSADE

Generous employees in the San Francisco office and plant, recently raised over $7,500 for the 1965 Bay Area United Crusade. Of the 320 donors, 76 became members of the Fair Share Club by pledging either one percent of their yearly salary or one hour's pay a month.

The San Francisco Field Department of the Architectural Products Division and the company's Advertising Department received Honor Plaques to signify that at least 85% of the department were Fair Share givers.

A Merit Award was given to the San Francisco Sales Department of the Commodity Products Division for having at least 60% Fair Share givers.

CHRISTMAS ON SATURDAY CANCELS PARTY PLANS

Because Christmas fell on a Saturday in 1965, Soulé employees took the Friday before as a holiday and traditional Soulé Christmas parties were cancelled.

At San Francisco however, the ladies gathered for a luncheon party at the Soulé cafeteria organized by Lucille Rickett. After lunch, homemade cakes and coffee were served and gifts were distributed.

1965 Soulé Safety Awards

Safety Director Mike Mickel has announced the 1965 Safety Achievement awards for the safety year ending in September.

The Presidential Safety Trophy was awarded to the SAN DIEGO plant as the plant with the best safety record for 1965.

The COMMODITY PRODUCTS DIVISION has received the Presidential Safety Award Plaque for the Division with the best safety record within the divisions.

The Presidential Safety Award Plaque for the Field Supervisor in each division with the best safety record has been awarded to Gerald Patchin in the Reinforcing Division and Fred McGhee in the Architectural Products Division.

Plant Departmental Safety Award Plaques for those departments having the best safety records (no lost time accidents) in 1965 are: In Los Angeles: Maintenance, Machine Shop, Yard and Shipping, Garage, Steel Structures, Special Products. At the Los Angeles Mill: Scrap Yard. At the San Francisco Plant: Metal Lath, Residential Sash Shipping, Hardware, Special Parts, Woodworking, Shipping and Receiving and Expanded Metal.

Awarded to the truck drivers who did not have a chargeable vehicle accident during the 1965 safety year were Safe Driver Awards of lapel pins and wallet cards. In Los Angeles: Roy McFarland, Arby Hollingsworth, Luther Burns, Oscar Spencer, Maurice Cates and Clifford White. In Dominguez: James Madden, Frank Kusy, Frank Cascio, James Kerr, Richard Tubbs, Frank Bravo, Robert Main, Lewis Smith, Jack Burns. In San Francisco: Joseph Celeste, William Jamnyke, Valentine Martin, Daniel Sorentino, Tony Aragon and Joseph Strongone. In Portland: Robert Elskamp, John Nelson and Frank Reischman. In Seattle: Gordon Tate.

HARRY SUTTON

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of Harry Sutton.

A supervisor for many years in the Los Angeles plant, Mr. Sutton started working for Soulé in 1946 as a helper and was promoted to Supervisor in 1950.
