SOULÉ "ORANGE" NOW IN ORANGE COUNTY

Last November there was a field in Santa Ana, overgrown with weeds, with only two rusty overhead cranes standing to show the area had once been inhabited.
That empty field now holds Soulé's newest fab shop and office building. The office has Soulé Adobe Tan steel wall panels and Soulé Aluminum Sliding windows, indirect lighting, and is completely air conditioned and landscaped. There are five people in the office with additional space for future growth.
The shop is 208 feet long, with bins for stocking 500 tons of rebar. There are two overhead cranes, a 60 foot long power feed table, a 1½" capacity shear, a 40 foot long power gauge table, a heavy bender and a vertical light bender.
Separate facilities enable unloading and loading out two large trailers at the same time. The shop employs six persons.
The shop was constructed through the help of Mel Durham and Bill Lucas, with sole assistance from Darrell Runyan and Jerry Silva of Los Angeles.
The Santa Ana office is headed-up by Bill Lucas, a 19 year veteran in reinforcing steel. He joined Soulé in 1961 as a detailer in San Diego and was most recently District Supervisor of Engineering & Estimating at Fresno.
He is assisted in the office by Roger Malloy and Ron Rathmann, both detailers, Craig Lewis, order writer and detailer trainee, and Esther Longnecker, general girl Friday.
The shop is run by Mel Durham, Shop Foreman, Frank Adams, Night Shift Foreman, Bob Slagle, Ed Cortez, Charles Pongetti and Stanley Stevens.
Why did Soulé decide to locate an office in Santa Ana? Because Orange County is the fastest growing major county in the nation and is the third ranking county in the state in population (1,261,600). And it's growing at the rate of 190 persons a day. Soulé will be there to grow with the area and help the area grow.

NEW PRODUCTS ON THE MOVE
*RANCHER BUILDING. Soulé Buildings Division has come up with the answer to a low-cost, small, easily erected and readily expandable building. It's called the Rancher Building, and it comes in 12 or 20 foot widths.*
*It can be as short as 12 feet, yet because of simple modular construction, it can be extended as long as desired.*
*The Architectural Products Division has introduced the new Soulé 1000 Series Extruded Aluminum Door Frame to the market. It was developed for us in high-rise commercial structures.*
Thanks to Soulé Commodity Products Division, Crocker-Citizens Bank in Los Angeles, and their customers can sleep nights.
The bank's two main vaults were burglar-proofed with Steelcrete mesh and Soulé reinforcing steel.
The system involves alternate layers of expanded metal and reinforcing bars a little over a foot thick, with concrete over it.
It's virtually explosion proof, and would take so long to drill and burn through the most seasoned criminal would be caught before he was halfway finished.
The Crocker-Citizens job is an excellent example of two divisions working together for a sale. It was sold jointly by Herm Neff of Reinforcing and Lew Howell of Commodity Products, both from the Los Angeles office.
"City Beautiful" Award for Soulé Building
*The Buildings Division has captured it's second "City Beautiful" award from the city of Corona, Calif. for the San Vallé Tile Kilns job.*
*San Vallé was so proud of their beautiful new and huge manufacturing facilities that they ran advertising showing off the new building.*

NAMES AND FACES IN THE NEWS
CALVIN (BUD) WILLIAMSON'S title has been changed from Vice President-Manufacturing to Vice President-Steel Mill Operations. This is a further step in the divisionalization plan of the company. His headquarters have moved from San Francisco to the Dominguez mill.
GEORGE SCOTT also moved to the mill from the San Francisco plant and was promoted to Project Engineer.
ROBERT LILEY has been appointed Employment Supervisor in Los Angeles. He will alternate his time between the plant and mill.
KEN THOMAS has been promoted to Print Shop Supervisor for the company.
JACK TEKELL celebrated his 20th anniversary with the company last month. He is in the Los Angeles Commodity Products operation.
FRANK CABRERA has been promoted to Working Foreman in the San Francisco Die Shop, replacing Gene Maier who retired.
Buildings Division
CHARLES WEEKS has been appointed to the new position of Manager of Sales Service. He will continue to direct the San Francisco Sales District.
DON PETRO was transferred to the position of Sales Engineer, San Francisco District.
ED HAMPTON has transferred from Seattle to San Francisco as Sales Coordinator.
JOHN CROWHURST has assumed the duties of Sales Service Supervisor, Southwest Region.
W. STEENBOCK has been appointed estimator, Southwest Region.
Reinforcing Steel Division
L. J. (NOONY) PAGAN has been promoted to Field Superintendent in San Francisco.

One of our field men fell headfirst from a ladder 14 feet above ground when he received a severe electrical shock. He had a drill motor in one hand and a power screw driver in the other — both connected through extension cords to the 110 volt AC power source. The current was flowing from one hand to the other through his body when the rest of the crew reached him and they had to disconnect a power cord to stop the current. When the current passes through the heart it sometimes either stops it or upsets the normal rhythm thus causing death. In this particular case the man was lucky as he has suffered no serious after effects to date.
CAUSE OF ACCIDENT: The ground lug on one extension cord plug had been filed down on one side so that it could be — and was — mistakenly plugged into the power circuit instead of the ground circuit in the receptacle of another extension cord. The plug can normally be inserted only in the proper holes because the ground lug will not fit the power lead holes. If the ground lug is altered, it can fit *any* hole. *This can put power directly to the body of the hand power tool!* If you then touch the tool the current can go to ground through your body, and you receive a shock which can be either quite mild or very severe.
REMEMBER: Do not use defective extension cords and be on the lookout for altered plugs or receptacles.

New Name for Division
The Steel Structures Division is sporting a brand new name. It is now "Soulé Buildings, A Division of Soulé Steel Company."
The new name is in keeping with increased marketing activities in complete packaged buildings.

Bowling
The Portland bowling team won the Builders Exchange Bowling League Championship this year.
Golf
The first annual golf tournament between the Los Angeles office, Dominguez Mill and San Diego office was staged on August 26. The Dominguez Mill won the tournament on the last hole by sinking a breathtaking 20 foot putt. George Scott won low medalist honors to add to the Mill's glory. (Ed. note: Gene Springer was assigned to take pictures, but left the camera home — hence no photos).
