COMPANY ADDS VENTURA REBAR PLANT AND OFFICE

Recognizing the rapid industrial growth of Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles on the Pacific Ocean, the Reinforcing Steel Products Division has opened a new plant and office in Ventura.

The installation at 331 West Lewis Street includes a Soule Building shop 50' x 120', a 22' x 45' office building faced with Soule high rib panelling and a parking area.

District Sales Manager is Reg Velozo who held a similar position with Soule in Seattle. He has 22 years experience in the reinforcing steel industry; five of these with Soule. When he's not hard at work in the rebar business he's out enjoying the beauties of the golf course.

The office staff includes Pete Schlegel, District Supervisor of Detailing and Estimating, Allen Abrahamson, Junior Detailer, and Betty Ann Copps, Reinforcing Steel Sales Secretary. Pete has 18 years experience in the reinforcing steel industry. He has been with Soule in both Los Angeles and Seattle.

Shop Foreman Frank Adams can stock many tons of rebar in his new Ventura shop. Equipment includes a 5-ton overhead crane, 2-inch capacity shear with power tables, a heavy bender and a vertical light bender. Frank joined Soule in 1956 at Torrance. Shop helpers include John Jorgensen, Pedro Palismo and Larry Talley.

In the field Gil Tetreault serves as Area Foreman. He joined Soule in 1968 as a journeyman ironworker in Los Angeles. In his spare time, Gil enjoys hunting, fishing and working on his vacation cabin.

NAMES IN THE NEWS

Jim Stretch has returned to Soulé as inside salesman for the Special Products Division, Los Angeles . . . Bill Kuhn, formerly inside salesman for Special Products (L.A.) is now an outside salesman . . . Soulé Buildings Division welcomes Linn Harlow as its new Dealer Representative for the Denver territory.

On sick leave: R. T. Bugg and Lee Elmberg, San Francisco — "Hello" and hope you get better . . . On the move: Bob Irons, inside salesman for Commodity Products Division, from Seattle to Portland . . . Duane Jackson has transferred to L.A. as Senior Detailer for the Reinforcing Products Division, from San Diego. Duane joined Soulé as a Detailer in 1962.

Ralph Derrick is the new Traffic Manager, Los Angeles, taking the place of Clifton Mayo who retired in March. Ralph is married and the father of three children. He comes to Soulé from Fisk Trucking Company where he was Traffic and Office Manager for seven years.

Moving from San Francisco to Los Angeles is Herb Covey who is now assigned to the L.A. Estimating Department. In addition, Herb is relief manager for Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Fresno, Ventura, San Diego and Santa Ana. Herb first joined Soulé as a Reinforcing Detailer in San Francisco in 1956. He has served in Phoenix as Estimating & Detailing Supervisor.

Architectural Products Division reports that Richard Dent has been appointed Central Region Field Superintendent. Dick has 19 years background in the erection of architectural metals. He has been a Soulé foreman in both San Francisco and Los Angeles.

New Plant Engineer for the San Francisco plant is Bill Taylor who comes from Coventry, England, by way of Toronto. His professional background includes work for such famous English firms as Dunlop Rim & Wheel and Rootes Motors. A Royal Air Force veteran, Bill is a bachelor whose hobbies are swimming, tennis, horseback riding, bridge and chess.

*Photo: SOULÉ BUILDING KEEPS QUEEN MARY COMPANY — When the Queen Mary docked at its permanent home in Long Beach a building was needed for warehousing materials to be removed and stored during the venerable liner's conversion to a hotel and convention center. Soulé Buildings Division filled the need with this 40' x 94' Mainstreeter Building.*

IN MEMORIAM

Since the last issue of Soulé News we have learned of the passing of Otto Grey, former plant manager of the Portland Plant, 8000 S. W. Birchwood Road, Portland, Oregon 97225.

SOULÉ OLD TIMERS

Beginning with this issue I'm proud to present the "Old Timers" column for *Soulé News*.

This column is planned to keep Soulé retirees informed about Company activities as well as to provide a means for you to keep in touch with one another.

I'd appreciate hearing from each of you. Drop me a line at Soulé Steel Company, P. O. Box 3510, Rincon Annex, San Francisco 94119 and tell me what you're doing. We'd especially like to have photos of your activities. Traveling, hobbying, fishing, golfing — whatever you're doing. I've already heard from several Soulé old timers who have asked for news of their colleagues.

*Furth is Senior Vice President of the Marcona Corporation. He is a graduate of the University of California and holds an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School. A resident of Lafayette, California, Furth is married and the father of two girls.*

STYLE IN STEEL

Several products from the Commodity Products Division are featured in the luxurious Style in Steel Home co-sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Southern Counties and Southern California Gas Companies. The home is located on the 8th fairway of Los Coyotes Country Club at New Bellehurst, Buena Park, California.

The home dramatizes the versatility, and beauty of steel products in home construction. Contemporary in design, the home has 4,000 square feet of living space and is constructed almost entirely of steel, right down to the steel-reinforced kitchen and patio carpeting

Soulé drywall studs, channel studs and accessories were used. Gary Beckman, Los Angeles, was the Soulé salesman.
