FROM BEAST TO BEAUTY
Vicki Lucas, 14 year old daughter of Phoenix District Manager, Bill Lucas, has already become an expert on reinforcing steel.
She developed a project called "From Beast to Beauty - A Visual Story of the Production of Rebar," which was entered in the Paradise Valley School Science Fair.
It traced the Soule reinforcing steel process from the scrap pile to the finished building with color photographs and captions mounted in a large binder. It was accompanied with a detailed written explanation of each process, a board exhibiting all sizes of rebar and various brochures and samples.
The project starting with the scrap pile, continued to show the furnaces in operation, the continuous casting machine in operation, reheat furnace, the rolling process, machinery in the Phoenix fab shop, loading and unloading of rebar fabricated material, hoisting and placement of material, rebar in forms, pouring concrete, and finally, the completed building.
Vicki received an excellent grade for her efforts and was one of the finalists whose work was held over for exhibition.
Her father says that Vicki became so interested in the work that he may have a female detailer in a few years in the office.

SHULENBERGER ELEVATED
Ralph Shulenberger has been elected Vice President - Employee Relations. According to Lee Soule, the honor is well deserved recognition of the accomplishments that he has made in his field of endeavor.
BEDFORD NEW V.P. AND DIRECTOR
Jim Bedford has been elected a Director of the company. He is presently Vice President - Architectural Products.
He is a graduate architect from the School of Building, Brixton, England, and has been with Soule for 16 years.
CRAIG CARPENTER RETIRES
Craig Carpenter, popular Vice President of the Reinforcing Division, retired this summer. He also retired from the company's Board of Directors.
He had been with Soule since 1950, and had 20 years of experience in the fabricating steel industry prior to that.
At a luncheon at San Francisco's Bohemian Club, the Board of Directors presented him with a trip to Spain for him and his wife, and a certificate of appreciation for his contributions to the company.
The Western Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, in which he had been active for many years, also honored him at their Annual Meeting.

BYE BEA
Bea Waggener, Accounts Payable Clerk in San Francisco, has retired after 21 years of paying the company's bills.
She was hosted at a retirement party at the Brentwood Lodge in South San Francisco by fellow employees.

OJEDA RETIRES
Rafael Ojeda, San Francisco plant employee has retired. He has been with Soulé since 1956.
A LOT OF SAFETY
A special Safe Driving award was presented to Frank Kusy (l.) by John Rogachenko (r.) on behalf of the company for an outstanding safe driving record: 19 years and 270,000 miles without a chargeable accident. He joined Soulé at Los Angeles in 1950. Frank will be retiring from the company soon. Good luck to you, Frank.

Soulé employees must love animals. First it was Rusty the dog, now it's Mitzi the colt. She was born this Spring and lives next door to the Newark fab shop where the employees spoil her with carrots and sugar.

**DEATHS**
It is with regret that we announce the deaths of George Thomas, Mill Accountant at Carson, who had been with Soulé 31 years; Frido Pogacnik, who recently retired after over 15 years in the Export Department of the Buildings Division; Fred Nilsen, Project Engineer in the Architectural Products Division.
