SOULÉ OPENS PLANT IN INDONESIA

While overseas marketing is nothing new to Soulé, *manufacturing* overseas is new. Under the official title of P. T. Soulé Aluminium Indonesia (PTSAI), our company is participating in a joint venture with P. T. Silga, a large Indonesian contracting and engineering firm. In a somewhat underdeveloped country, emerging as it is from many years of colonialism and the ravages of occupation during World War II, Soulé felt there was great opportunity coupled with tremendous challenge.

Lowell I. Carstensen, President-Director of PTSAI, is equal to this challenge. Joining Soulé in September 1972, he spent a year in the home office planning the venture. A personable, patient, and persistent man—all qualities essential to his assignment—he has worked diligently to understand the complexities of Indonesian customs and business practices, to say nothing of the language barrier. He has now succeeded in erecting and equipping our manufacturing plant in Jakarta's Anjol industrial area.

Housed in a clear-span, adobe tan Soulé Steel Building, 120' x 160' x 24', the new factory and offices have a staff of 22 salaried Indonesian employees and about 20 hourly workers. Production in the new facility started August 12, 1974. Eight jobs have been completed to date which include shop fronts, pivoted windows, and interior partitions. Work is also in progress on the new Hilton Hotel in Jakarta.

Aluminum is extruded and anodized by a totally Indonesian-owned factory in the same industrial area.

Lowell, his wife Phillis, and son David, 16, live in a home provided by PTSAI along with a driver, cook, and housekeeper. In permanently tropical weather, they have also been joined on occasion by cockroaches and lizards, which Phillis admits "took some getting used to." A few new household chores to which Phillis

was introduced are: boiling water for the day and storing in containers to cool; preparing vegetables, fruits, and eggs for consumption by scrubbing, soaking in disinfectant and rinsing in sterilized water before refrigerating. Recreation is provided by membership in the American Club, which has a swimming pool and tennis courts. Television viewing is limited to government-owned and operated stations with one American program per day at 9:00 p.m. Dave has just completed 10th grade at the British/American Embassy School.

Agriculture occupies 80 percent of the population, producing rice, maize, soybeans, tobacco, coffee, pepper, tea, and sugar. The people are, however, learning how to utilize the many rich resources: oil, rubber, coal, bauxite, tin, manganese, copper, nickel, gold, and silver. The venture that Soulé is undertaking will, of course, help to increase job opportunities and tap some of the unexplored talent in this populous land.

S.F. EMPLOYEE PICNIC...BARBECUE & BRUISES

If the San Francisco and Newark employees were noticeably limping around and wincing from pain on Monday, September 9, it was because of the First Annual "So-So-Crates" Employees Picnic, held on Saturday, September 7. "So-So-Crates" is the name chosen for the new Soulé Employees Recreational Club for the Soulé S.F. and Newark office and plant workers.

The picnic was held in San Bruno City Park, with 150 employees, families and friends present. Monday's aches, for normally sedentary Soulé employees, were caused by a schedule of volleyball, tennis, baseball, and various races for adults and children.

The hotly-contested baseball game ended with the G&A Stars beating the Ding Bats by a score of 12 to 11.

But time out was taken from all of the strenuous activity for a delicious barbecue of chicken and spareribs, cooked by club President Chuck "Big Mac" Mekeel, and Vice President, Ken "Brother" Thomas.

Lee Soulé Receives Spurgeon Award

Lee Soulé was presented with the William Spurgeon III Award for his efforts in establishing Special Interest Exploring in the Bay Area.

The late William Spurgeon was dedicated to establishing his concept of Special Interest Exploring throughout the country. Special Interest Explorer Posts are sponsored by various businesses, industries, profession and civic groups in the community for boys of high school age. The boy selects a post of his particular interest, and through participation learns more about it, aiding him in choosing his career.

Lee Soulé built the Exploring Program in the Bay Area, becoming Council Chairman in 1963 and served until 1971.

Soulé Steel Co., in conjunction with Schlage Lock Co., sponsors "Careers In Industry" Explorer Post #178 in San Francisco.

Don Watkins, company Treasurer, has been elected a director of the National Association of Accountants for 1974-75.

THE COACH

Two of his sons play on the team, and the oldest set a record this year by hitting in 20 consecutive games, and struck out 17 of 18 hitters in one game.*

RETIREMENTS Charles Dennison has retired from the company after 35 years in the San Francisco field for the Reinforcing Division.
