SOULÉ SEEKS TIN CANS FOR RECYCLING

Soulé will be a leader in recycling scrap tin cans if supplies can be made available to the Carson mill. This was brought out by Lee Soulé in a speech to an American Iron and Steel Institute sponsored seminar on solid waste recycling, held in Los Angeles.

This was followed by a tour of the mill, where the group observed melting of steel can scrap in the furnace. However, the scrap used in the demonstration had to be shipped from San Francisco—and this is the problem.

There is presently some tin can scrap available on the market in the Los Angeles area. Soulé is prepared to purchase about 10 percent of the mill's requirement if it were available.

A magnetic separator is required to separate the can scrap from other household trash at the garbage collection point.

If private industries or communities collecting waste could install magnetic separators, the addition of cans would contribute substantially to easing the shortage and high cost of scrap steel from other sources (see Soule News, Summer Issue, 1973).

This is the goal of the AISI, and the reason for the one-day meeting, which civic and industry leaders attended. Soulé did its part by participating in the seminar and using its mill facilities to further demonstrate the use of used tin cans.

Another speaker at the meeting, Ronald Kinsey, President of Resource Technology Corp., and consultant to AISI, said, "There is more than a billion dollars in metals, mainly steel, ready to be mined from our household waste each year."

He added, "There's no problem finding the markets. There is no one who has magnets turned on who can't sell."

There are some 80 billion steel cans, more than 4 million tons, used in the United States every year. This is a source that until now has been wasted, but eventually may bring the supply of scrap, and the price, more in balance to the producer and consumer.

BUILDINGS DIVISION DEALER MEETING

The Soulé Buildings Division held its annual Dealer Meeting in Seattle, with dealers attending from throughout the West.

Dealer of the Year awards went to Hallanson Corp., Riverside (Southwest), S&M Welding Co. Ltd., Honolulu (Central), and Commercial Industries Co. Inc., Bellevue, Wash. (Northwest).

Building of the Year awards were issued to Carl Brooks, Inc., Long Beach (Southwest), S. L. Miller, Visalia, Calif. (Central), and Olympic Specialty Contractors, Anchorage (Northwest).

Twenty-three of the dealers received quota awards, and a $500,000 sales plaque was given to Commercial Industries Co. Inc., Bellevue, Wash. Samuel Stewart and Gene Fuller from Soulé were given One-Million dealer rep awards.

HEROES AT MILL

When an employee at the Carson Fab. Shop suffered a heart attack on the job, quick thinking and teamwork on the part of three fellow workers saved his life, with immediate first aid.

JACK SOTO RETIRES

Jack Soto was given a retirement party by some of his friends in the company when he retired as Foreman at the Reinforcing Division's Newark plant. He had been with the company for 24 years.

E. B. McCLURE DIES

Mr. Egbert Benson McClure, former Vice President and Director of Soulé, has passed away. He was 81 years old.

Mr. McClure was born in Illinois in 1893, and spent many of his years in the heartland of America before coming west to Los Angeles. With a family background in construction, he worked for General Fireproofing and Truscon Steel Co. before joining Soulé in 1943, during the middle of World War II. He became a Vice President in 1944, a Director in 1946, and was the manager of the Los Angeles office until his retirement in 1958.
