CORPORATE SECRETARY'S Department
The Corporate Secretary's Department, in one way or another, affects everyone in the Company. Located in the San Francisco home office, the Corporate Secretary, Howard Soule, directs a variety of administrative services.
As Corporate Secretary, Howard is responsible for, on the corporate level: companywide legal matters, patents and trademarks, records retention, gathering market research data, management guide preparation, assistance in corporate planning Board of Directors meetings, administration of the Edward L. Soulé Foundation, and special assignments from the President and Management.
If that isn't enough, there are also staff responsibilities in the home office which include: the library, home office purchasing, print shop, communications, vending services, office layout and planning security, the Soulé News, and the San Francisco warehouse. He also coordinates the activities of the Schlage Lock Co. and Soulé sponsored Explorer Post.
Naturally, to accomplish all of this and more, he needs a lot of able assistance.
He is assisted by Lois Pintar, who also wears several hats. She is the Buyer for home office purchases, head of the Company library, and is overall secretary to the department.
Ken Thomas supervises the Company Print Shop which provides a number of services -- the many stationery items and forms required, Company mailings (including printing and mailing the Soulé News). In addition to the regular printing, he oversees the collating, padding and folding activities. Working for Ken are Margaret Ballestrazze, Multigraph/ Addressesograph operator; Linda Mason, blueprint operator, and Kevin Sanders, messenger clerk (1 Explorer member)
Linking the Soulé organization together are the communications systems, a vital function, with PBX under Elsie Kopfmann and Teletype under Gladys Kallman.
A recent addition to Howard's staff is Warehouse Foreman, Andy Fabbri. Andy has been with the Company 40 years, and is the son of Joe Fabbri, the Company's first plantman. Andy is now the sole plant employee in San Francisco, handling shipping and receiving, maintenance, and the miscellaneous warehouse duties for San Francisco.
Other Corporate Secretary responsibilities are the preparation of Board of Directors' meetings, and the Soulé Foundation for which Howard is Secretary-Treasurer. It is a non-profit charitable organization established by the late Mr. Edward L. Soulé, Sr., to serve educational and religious charities.
Howard is also active as a Committee-man in the Company's co-sponsored Special Interest Explorer Post No. 178. This Post, affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, is jointly sponsored by Schlage Lock Company and Soulé-Steel Company. Fellow employee Chuck Mekeel is Post Advisor. The Post is made up of teenage high school boys and girls from San Francisco's Wilson and Balboa high schools. In describing Post activities, Howard says, "Post No. 178 members take tours of industry to acquaint themselves with what industry does, and what job opportunities there are for them after graduation. It is the sponsors' way of contributing a bit of business expertise and personal time to young teenage men and women in our community that money alone can't buy." From time to time Soulé employees are treated to a special tour with the Explorers, and the enthusiastic response indicates the mutual benefit of these encounters.
Howard assumed his job as Corporate Secretary ten years ago, upon the retirement of Mr. Niles Millar (present Alumni Associate Editor of the Soulé News), the Company's first Corporate Secretary.

NEW CARSON FAB. SHOP
The Carson fabricating personnel have a shiny new home which is a Soule' metal building next to the mill. The building houses a new reinforcing fabrication complex, with the former building being utilized for the Soule' fence post operation.
The 112 low profile Soule' building is 100 ft. x 504 ft., with a 37 ft. eave ht. The lean-to is 30 ft. x 140 ft.
The building's foundation uses Soule' rebar placed by the company reinforcing field crew, and the structure was erected by Soule' steel building crews.
Lou Richer was Project Coordinator, with Lewis Martinez as Foreman for rebar placement, and Bill Benson, Foreman for building erection.

ENGINEERS TOUR CARSON FACILITY
Soule' hosted over 200 engineers, members of the Structural Engineers Association of California, at the Carson Mill and Fab Shop with demonstrations of rebar fabrication and placement.
In a joint meeting sponsored by the Western Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, the engineers toured various Southern California steel facilities in "Rebar Workshop Field Trips".

NEW GADGET AT MILL
A new A.R.L. Quantometer has been installed in the Carson Steel Mill Laboratory. It provides a computerized analysis of the mineral content of the scrap charge in the mill's furnace.

POINTERS FROM PERSONNEL
(Editor's Note: This will be a regular feature of Soulé News, bringing current information on personnel matters; and when appropriate, answering questions of interest to all, or a large segment of employees.)
A brief reminder to help cushion the impact of that first 1975 paycheck, as well as forestall those plaintive calls to the payroll Department: For those of you who have not had to pay Social Security or the California Disability Insurance Tax these last months (after reaching maximum base earnings), the take-home pay of your 1975 checks will be reduced because deductions are again required by law.
Also, under legislation enacted by the U.S. Congress, the base earnings on which the Social Security Tax will be calculated in 1975 has been increased from $13,200 to $14,100 although the rate remains the same. Each employee has 5.85% deducted, and the employer pays an additional 5.85% on each employee's earnings -- for a combined payment of 11.7%
At present, the State Disability Insurance Tax applies to the first $9000 of an employee's earnings.

And now for the good news: Some of you have already had occasion to file claim under the new Dental Plan for salaried employees. Judging by the comments, this is a most welcome and greatly appreciated addition to the benefits provided for Soulé salaried employees.
A special form is required for dental claims, and these are available at the Employee Relations Department in Los Angeles, Carson and San Francisco.
LIFE SAVING AWARDS
The three Soulé Carson Fab Shop employees who saved a fellow worker's life following a heart attack (Soulé News, Summer, 1974), have been presented with the Liberty Mutual Life Saving Award.
In a presentation ceremony, Brice McFall, Vice President, Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., awarded gold medals to Sonny Brewster, Rick Bliven and Bob Scott.
The award was established in 1920, and to date, only 400 were approved from over 3,000 requests.
