SOULÉ LEADS THE WAY IN METAL BUILDINGS

The modern Soule metal building resembles the original product as much as new Cadillac does the "tin lizzy". Soule started in the steel building business after World War II, with a "utility building," covered with galvanized corrugated steel sheets. The present day buildings are architecturally compatible with other building materials, have attractive low-profile roofs, and come with baked-on color finishes. The Buildings Division has made great progress during the past eight years under the leadership of George Ford, Vice President in charge of Metal Buildings and Steel Mill Products. A veteran of more than 28 years with the company, George is also a member of the Soule Board of Directors. His previous positions in the company have been Manager of Steel Jobbing, and Director of Purchasing. He is assisted by Al Colombo, Operations & Contracts Manager, and Rosalie Kotch, "right hand" and Secretary/Supervisor. Several well-coordinated departments contribute to the vitality of the division. They are headquartered at the San Francisco home office, mostly in the "Ford" Building, a handsome Soule building (named for who else?). The Product Development Department, headed by Ian Miller, develops new standard building models and new products. The standards are published so that dealers and salesmen can write orders and specifications from the manuals and price books developed by the Estimating Department. A few examples of Product Development are the Mainstreeter and Rancher building lines, cold storage buildings, the Temp-Con® insulated panels, Water-Guard® panel lap, Shadowline panels, and the low roof profile Skyline line of buildings, and the new agricultural buildings. Special engineering, design and detailing for jobs not covered by standards, and adapting standards for special uses, are done by the Engineering Department under John Kaskavalcıyan (known as Johnny K). Both the Engineering and Product Development Departments make wide use of the Division's own computer in design and research work.

The Sales Department not only has direct sales responsibilities in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas, but assists dealers in an advisory capacity in operating their own sales organizations and keeping them informed about developments at Soule. Soule Sales Managers are Howard Rumrey, Central Region; Bob Weyand, Southwest Region; and Bob Thompson, Northwest Region. The new International Sales Manager is Marshall Colo, who supervises dealers throughout the world. Over the years, Soule has assembled the best dealer organization in the West. They are vital to the company's marketing activities, covering all territories except metropolitan Los Angeles and San Francisco. Most dealers are general contractors, and all provide turn-key construction service in their area. Adding to the strength of the dealer organization in recent years, is better training and better communications on the part of Soule representatives, including management and supporting departments. A large dealer network covers all major markets in the West, including Hawaii and Alaska. In fact, the 1975 dealer meeting will be held in Honolulu, April 10 and 11. Supporting the dealer and company sales efforts is the Advertising Department, under Gus Wheeler, Advertising Supervisor, a newcomer to Soule. A substantial sum of dollars is invested in advertising by the division each year. The advertising program includes direct mail to prime prospects, newspaper and magazine ads, Yellow Page advertising, and sales brochures. It all pays off in sales leads that sell buildings. Soule supplies advertising materials, helps preparation of dealers' own ads and then matches funds spent by them in their local area. The finished product of all the promotion, sales, estimating, engineering, detailing and product development, comes out of the plant in Huntington Park (L.A.), Calif. Under the direction of Jack Dressen, Plant Manager, buildings are turned out on an assembly line basis, with automated equipment with design and layout by Bill Dillenbeck. The plant is presently undergoing further modernization, requiring transfer of the fence post operation to the Carson facility. Two new roll-forming machines are being added, one for purlins and one for sheets. The purlin line will be computer operated. In addition, there will be a new shear and a new paint line. One of the factors keeping metal buildings so competitive with other construction methods is fast field erection—weeks instead of months, reducing labor costs. Soule, using the most modern technology and equipment, reduces erection time even further. Field Supervisors are George Woods in San Francisco, and Bob Owens in the Southwest.

Some of the most notable recent jobs by Soule are for Western Pacific, San Francisco, Calif.; Safeway, Tulsa, Okla.; RJM Steel Warehouse, Santa Fe Springs, Calif.; Davis Wire Co., Kent, Wash.; Smuckers Jams and Jellies, Salinas, Calif.; and Purex Corp., Southgate, Calif.

There are hundreds of Soule buildings dotting the Western landscape—some, the old galvanized utility buildings—most, modern and attractive buildings of today. Soule buildings have made the metamorphosis from the ugly caterpillar to the beautiful butterfly.

PAUL WOO TO HOST DEALERS AT HONOLULU MEETING

Paul Woo, President of S & M Welding in Honolulu, Hawaii, will be the host for the '75 Dealer Meeting, April 10 and 11.

He will host a luau in true Hawaiian tradition on the island of Oahu, for dealers, their wives and Soule personnel.

Paul has been a successful dealer for three years, with sales just shy of $1 million last year.

Those attending the meeting will stay at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, with a Hawaiian monarchy decor, and a view of Diamond Head across the greenery of Kapiolani Park. Rosalie Kotch, as usual, will entertain the wives during meeting times with a tour of Kapiolani Park on Thursday, and a visit to Paradise Park, with its jungle gardens on Friday.

Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT

Have you ever said, "Why are they doing this?", or, "I *wish* they would keep us informed,"—well, here's your chance. In our initial column last month, we said we would try to print the answers to any questions that have widespread interest, and now we need the questions! Send them to the S.F. Employee Relations Dept., signed or not, as you prefer. If the question is signed, you will receive a personal answer. Meanwhile, here is a question of concern to many:

Q. On all sides, all I hear is "depression". Unemployment is going up as fast as prices. My buddy's company folded. I'd like to know how Soulé looks at the coming year—and, what about our jobs?

A. (By Stanley E. Soulé, Executive Vice President)—"Soulé experienced a dramatic cutback with the phase-out of the Architectural Products Division in 1973. We feel, however, that this decision strengthened our position in the remaining company operations. During late 1974, and continuing at present, we are one of the few companies that have embarked on an expansion program. We are optimistic about our company position for 1975, but at the same time we intend to constantly monitor the markets and the economic indices so as not to make the mistake of over confidence. It is our sincere desire that, with the help of all of you, we can prevent any business reversal in 1975 that might have an adverse effect on your employment."

This second question has been asked by several of you:

Q. My doctor is upset with having to fill out so many complicated claim forms. Can anything be done?

A. State insurance laws require a doctor's diagnosis and signature to validate the claim, but Liberty Insurance, for one, will accept your doctor's own form if it has both of these. Just attach it and the statement of his charges to the claim. Or, the doctor may just complete the diagnosis and sign Part B of the Liberty claim and attach his statement of charges.

CARSON HELPS NEEDY FAMILY

Employees at Carson took up a Christmas collection to help a needy family have a happy holiday.

In all, $279 was donated. The family received $130 in groceries. Each child was given a full outfit of clothing and a toy. In addition, the boys each received a jacket, and the girls, pajamas. The mother also was given a gift.
