Today, the Soulé Reinforcing Products Division boasts one of the most modern and largest reinforcing mill and fabricating facilities in the West, located at Carson in Southern California.

It wasn't always that way, though.

In 1911, Edward L. Soulé, Sr. opened a one-man office in San Francisco to design installations in the then-fledgling reinforcing steel industry.

So little was known at the time of the methods that he frequently had to work from reference books in French and German, and personally went into the field to instruct on installation of rebar.

In those days, rebar was just a flat merchant bar that had been heated and twisted like a straight pretzel. It wasn't until the 1920's that the hot-rolled round bar with deformations appeared.

Over the years Soulé has grown with the reinforcing steel industry, and has always been a leader.

There have been continuous improvements in the mill, such as the modern continuous casting process and an updated rolling mill.

Finishing touches are now being put on a brand-new fabricating plant at Carson, which like the mill, will be the most modern in the West. It will be fully operational in the Fall.

The new fab plant will occupy about five acres, leaving approximately 100 feet clear all around the main building. The main building is 100 feet wide by 504 feet long, with a 30-foot lean-to on each side, extending the full length on one side and 288 feet on the other.

Besides the shop area, there will be office space for three departments: field, shop and traffic. There will also be a garage for truck maintenance.

The shop will have a working stock of about 2800 tons of steel, plus extra storage for special cut lengths, moved by two 5-ton cranes running the entire length of the building. There will be three automated shear lines, with room to add a fourth. Extra lay down room for fabricated material will also be available. Eight trailers can be loaded without having to move any in or out.

The new facility will consolidate all Los Angeles County fabricating and related field activities in one central location.

Naturally, it's a Soulé metal building with Soulé rebar in the floor.

Warren Grundfor is the Reinforcing Division General Manager. In addition to the production facilities, he heads up fabrication plants and offices at Newark, Sacramento, Fresno, Ventura, Santa Ana, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and Phoenix.

He joined the company as a salesman in Los Angeles in 1947, and rose through the division, until his appointment January 1, 1972, following the retirement of Craig Carpenter, the only other Reinforcing Division Manager in the company's history.

Warren has a lot of good people backing him up in the Division. We'll see most of them in this issue. Soulé reinforcing steel has played a major role in the development of the Twentieth Century West. Wherever you go there will be a large or small building, freeway, or bridge, with Soulé rebar holding it together.

GRUNDFOR HEADS W.C.R.S.I.

Warren Grundfor is the President of the Western Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, the only one from Soulé to ever occupy this prestigious position.

Over the years, Soulé has been a leader in the formation and activities of the organization, since its inception in 1961.

As its President, Grundfor is also Chairman of the W.C.R.S.I. Board of Directors, and a Director of the National C.R.S.I. organization.

The W.C.R.S.I. was formed to promote the use of reinforcing steel and assist those companies engaged in the business. There are about 75 member companies throughout the West.

Other Soulé people active in the organization are: Lee Soulé, member of Ferrous Scrap Committee; Scott Anderson, member of Post-Tension Committee; T. O. Carroll, Committee Chairman of the Seminars for Building Inspectors of Northern California; Arnold Dunyon, member of Southern Division Promotional Committee.

CHUCK MEKEEL HONORED

He has been devoted to Scouting for 18 years first as Scoutmaster of Troop 159, sponsored by Soulé, and later Explorer Post 178, sponsored jointly by Soulé and Schlage Lock Co.

Chuck has also earned the Scouter's Key and Order of the Arrow, both top awards.

SAFETY AWARDS

Each year, Lee Soulé, the President of the company, presents various Safety Achievement Awards.

The big prize, The Presidential Safety Trophy awarded to the Plant or Shop with the best safety record in 1974, went to—the Newark Fabrication Shop. Free Babcock is shown below receiving the award.

Awards also went to the Field Supervisor in each division with the best safety record. These went to Bob Fain, Fresno, for the Reinforcing Div., and Bob Owens, L.A., for the Buildings Div.

In addition, 20 truck drivers received safe driving lapel pins.

It is with regret we announce the death of Manuel Caro, who worked in the Anodizing Plant, San Francisco.

Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT

Did you notice our new column heading last month? *Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT* is now the official title, and that is how you can recognize our column each month. This is the place where employees can come for information they want or get answers to even nitty-gritty questions, such as:

**Q.** I am planning to go to Mexico for my vacation. Am I covered for both medical and hospitalization under our insurance plan?

**A.** Our Group Insurance Plans cover you anywhere in the world, in or out of the United States. However, if you do have a claim you will have to pay the bill at the time of treatment and then on your return, submit the claim, together with receipts, for reimbursement. As a precaution, it would be wise to take blank claim forms when you go on a trip or plan to be away on vacation (maybe camping in the mountains). Be sure to carry your insurance ID card also, obtainable from the San Francisco Employee Relations office, if you don't have one.

**Q.** In the recent communications meetings with salaried employees in L.A. some figure was quoted about the amount a company pays for fringe benefits. What was it?

**A.** Actually, "fringe benefits" are not so "fringe" when it comes to their cost. According to a recent survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, employers are averaging an additional 32.7% over the employee's regular salary.

**Q.** How does Soulé stack up against this figure?

**A.** Soulé's average is slightly higher—about 1-2% higher. Translated, this means that there is an additional cost to Soulé that amounts to approximately 1/3 the employee's actual salary [illegible]

SOULÉ GOODWILL AMBASSADORS: Ramona Kurtz (RF-Sac) appeared on the March of Dimes Telethon aired on Channel 40 in Sacramento and vicinity. Playing the piano, she performed "Etude in D (Un Sospiro)" by Franz Liszt . . . Carol Marty and her mother, Esther Erickson, attended a reception for Swedish Ambassador and Countess Wilhelm Wachmeister on their recent visit to S.F. The press reported raves for Esther's outstanding flower arrangements . . . His talk, entitled, "The Operation of a Mini-Computer System at Soulé Steel Co.," outlined the feasibility of applying small computers for process and inventory control in a mini-mill . . . She is also President of the Orange County YMCA Indian Maiden Board (a mother-daughter organization), and Secretary to the Placentia-Yorba Linda Jr. All-American Football Board.

NON-RETIRING RETIREE: Jo Cowden (Acctg-SF) was installed on April 27 as Associate Matron in College Court #12 of Amaranth, before the Supreme and Grand Officers.
