CARSON DATA CENTER

In some way the working life of Soule' employees is affected every day by the Univac 90/30 computer in the Carson Data Center. The machines and their human masters' sole function is to make life a little easier and less complicated for all of us.

Soule's Data Center has entered its 15th year, upgrading to a third-generation Univac computer, and initiating the move to the Carson facility in February.

Currently, the Computer Center processes a variety of operating reports and records, including both hourly and salaried payrolls. Manifests and tags for the Reinforcing Fabrication Shop in Carson are prepared on a daily basis; standard building orders for the Los Angeles Plant at Wilmington Avenue are exploded against a bill of material and a shipping list is prepared; accurate and timely reports are generated for the Reinforcing Division, Steel Buildings Division, the Rolling Mill at Carson, and the San Francisco and Carson Accounting Departments.

The brains behind the complicated operation in Carson are: Tom Kelley, Data Processing Manager; Judy Marshall, Operations Manager; LaVerne Erwin, Computer Operator; Kathy Waddell and Angela Darnell, Mohawk Operators. Tom Kelley has been with Soule' over eleven years, and has spent the past year writing computer programs in Cobol to replace the programs written for the Univac 9300 housed at Wilmington Avenue until June of this year.

The Univac 90/30 is the fifth computer system that Soule' has had in-house. The main processor contains 98,000 bytes of storage, and draws on 58 million bytes of on-line storage from two disk drives. The tape drives that are on the system are used for files that need not remain on disk, and to allow the processing of input from the Mohawk Data Encoders (known in the past as keypunch operators). We have one Mohawk unit in San Francisco Accounting, one in Carson Estimating, and four units in Data Processing.

The way all of this sophisticated hardware works is simply to take information in human language, transfer it to language the computer understands, feed it into the computer, and get the answers back out in terms humans can understand. To accomplish this, man had to invent languages that computers can understand. The programming languages available on the Univac 90/30 system are Assembly, a basic machine language; RPG II, a Report Generator currently used by Judy Marshall to program reports for the *(Continued page 5, col. 3)*

WELCOME NEWCOMERS

Vice President George Ford announced the appointment of Richard Marsellos as General Sales Manager for the Buildings Division.

Dick was born in Greenport, N.Y. He began his career in construction with Armco Steel. During the following 25 years, he held several key positions in the metal building industry, including Inland Building Systems, Inc., a factory-owned dealership; and was sales manager for A & S Building Systems, Inc. Immediately prior to joining Soule', he was president of Predesigned Construction, Inc., a major design-build construction firm headquartered in Houston.

He is a registered professional building designer, and past member of the Texas Society of the American Institute of Building Design.

Operating out of our Los Angeles plant and offices, Dick will be responsible for all dealer and company sales and market development throughout the eleven western states, Alaska and Hawaii.

Dick and his wife, Delia, have three grown children.

A BATTLESHIP ANCHOR IN ARIZONA??!!

Dedication ceremonies are planned for December 7 for the USS Arizona Anchor Memorial at the East Capitol Mall, Phoenix. School children and individuals contributed $8000 toward this project honoring their famous Arizona namesake ship. Soule's Phoenix Reinforcing people will reinforce the anchor drum.

United Way

Soule's Bay Area Chairman, Lowell Carstensen, reports over 90% of our San Francisco and Newark employees contributed over $5000 to the United Way. Because of this cooperative effort, Soule' was awarded the silver Merit Award for achieving 40% of our Full Share potential. Special thanks to Lowell Carstensen, Hazel Dunnigan, and donor representatives Bill Bjorkquist, Margaret Edwards, Harold Knox, and Shirley Mounsey for their work in the campaign.

At press time we had not received reports from other districts, but feel sure they were also successful.

Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT

**Q.** It has been about two years now since the pension reform bill was passed and I have heard a lot about how pension plans have to be changed to meet the new requirements, but I'm having a lot of trouble trying to learn what it's all about.

**A.** First of all, let me say you are not alone! Not even the legislators who voted for this law understood it completely. Deadlines for various reports and pension amendments required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (you can see why it's more commonly known as ERISA) have been extended not once, but several times. The final changes in the Soule Retirement Plan for Salaried Employees to accomplish complete compliance with the law will be effective the beginning of the next plan year — that is, December 1, 1976. The date varies for different pension plans in accordance with the beginning of the plan year. A new booklet will be issued explaining your eligibility and benefits which will be based on the plan as amended.

We have recently obtained copies of a 12-page booklet issued by the U.S. Labor Department which discusses the overall scope of ERISA in about as non-technical language as impossible. If any of you would be interested in having this booklet, just send a note to the SF Employee Relations office and a copy will be sent to you.

ORGANIZATION CHANGES

Executive Vice President Stanley Soule' announced that George Ford, Vice President-Metal Buildings and Steel Mill Products, has been assigned full responsibility for management and operation of the proposed joint venture being established for the manufacture and sale of our pre-engineered buildings and homes in Saudi Arabia.

Marshall Colo, Manager-International Sales, will be Managing Director for this operation, and will report to George Ford.

Ron Coble will be Sales Manager for the venture, reporting to Marshall Colo.

The Committee had some anxious moments the morning of their well-planned outing: "unusual" weather (for September 25), overcast and misty. But with everyone thinking positively, the skies over San Bruno Park cleared, and a pleasant day was delivered as ordered. STEELING ATTENTION

SMALL WORLD DEPT. — In June, Hazel and Otis Gravem (Steel Bldgs-SF) traveled to Scandanavia. In Bergen, Norway, they visited the birthplace of Otis' father. In Oslo, they met Geoff and Shirley Mounsey (Acctg-SF) and spent a few pleasant hours with them . . . Unfortunately, space does not permit detailing the Mounseys' delightful trip which was highlighted by a visit to Sortland, where Shirley lived as a girl; Grytoya, where they saw the midnight sun ("What a sight!"); two great-grandfathers' homes which had been visited often by Henrik Ibsen and used as a setting for Nora of "A Doll's House." Both still in use today . . . Karol and Pete Heineman (Steel Bldgs-SF) entertained Pete's sister and brother-in-law from Stuttgart, Germany — first reunion in 5 years. Their month-long stay must have been enjoyable as they hope to locate here permanently in the near future . . . Exhilarating was Connie Davis' (RF-SLC) 4-day river raft trip down the Green River. Traveling this beautiful river canyon was an inspiring experience which Connie hopes to have again next year. She reports her fellow rafters came from all over the U.S. and even a few from overseas . . . Bruce Culbertson (RF-SLC) and his son, Brent, also made the Green River raft trip over the Labor Day holiday.

BOWLING 'EM OVER — Congratulations to Jack Parkhill (Steel Bldgs-LA) for winning $125 at the No Tap Bowling Tournament, Trianon Bowling Alley.

HIS HONOR — On Friday evening, September 24, Niles O. Millar (Retired Corporate Secretary) was honored for his 44 years of service as Inspector of the 146th Masonic District. Mr. Millar is also Past Master (1930) of Durant Lodge No. 268 of this District. Joining the tribute were Lee, Stan, and Howard Soule', whose father, Edward Lee Soule', Sr., was also Past Master (1918) of Durant Lodge, No. 268, Berkeley, CA.

HERE COME THE BRIDES — Carma Crooks and Dennis Jorgensen (RF-SLC) became Mr. and Mrs. on August 19 at Las Vegas . . . a whirlwind engagement followed by a September 25 wedding united not only two nice people, but two Soule departments, Jack Hesketh (Steel Bldgs-LA) and Ruth Romash (Acctg-Carson) were married at St. Emydius Church, Lynwood. Vonnie Bannon (Acctg-LA) was Matron of Honor, her daughter Michelle was flower girl, Dave Lorz (Steel Bldgs-LA) best man, and Rick Wright (Steel Bldgs-LA) was photographer. Many Soule friends also on hand to wish them well. Further insuring their domestic bliss, co-workers presented them with a microwave oven!

BASSINET SET — Thank heaven for little girls: Jacqueline Renee is the new little granddaughter of Jack Parkhill (Steel Bldgs-LA). She arrived May 20, and weighed 8 lbs., 3 ozs. Proud parents are Larry and Juanita Parkhill . . . Fifth-time grandparents are Phillis and Lowell Carstensen (Adm.-SF), with the arrival of Caleb Carsten Evans, 7 lbs., 6 ozs., on August 4. Donna and Dave Evans are his proud mom and dad . . .

A whole flock of self-appointed god-parents in the S.F. office were excited at news of the birth of Mike and Vivian Rodriguez' (Acctg-SF) son, Christopher Edward (a name bigger than he at present) arrived August 17, weight 6 lbs., 3 ozs. The happy family is pictured above on his first visit to Soule'.

*(Continued from page 1)* Steel Building Advertising Department; Cobol, ordinary business language in which about 95% of all the Center's programs are written; and Fortran for formula translating and mathematical functions.

Programs are run on the computer through the use of the Uniscope 100, a CRT terminal. The operator keys in the name of the job, and the computer tells the operator what peripheral equipment is needed, and what program is being executed to process the data.

As the Carson Data Center is in a constant state of change, no sooner were the old programs converted, than new applications began to be programmed. The first, expected to be operable this fall, is the automatic extensions of Reinforcing Estimating. This winter will see the computerization of Accounts Receivable for the Credit Department's use.

An expansion of the Univac 90/30 will allow us to tie our branches directly to the computer via Univac terminals transmitting data over telephone lines. Computer estimating, tag writing, and manifest preparation, already in use in Carson, would immediately be available to the district offices with minor modification of existing programs.

We hope we have cut through the technical mystery, the strange-sounding jargon, and the complex equipment to help you understand a little better how the computer helps you.

PUBLIC RELATIONS IN ACTION

Again we are happy to report on some of the ways Soule' employees are representing the company in outside activities . . . Don Watkins, Vice President Finance and Treasurer, was recently awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his service, interest and support on the National Board of the National Association of Accountants . . . Sonny Williams (Steel Bldgs. Field Supervisor) and his men did such an excellent job and had such good public relations, the following letter was sent to the general contractors, Melones Contractors, by the Department of the Army, Sacramento District, Corps of Engineers:

*"At this time I would like to express appreciation from my staff and myself to your subcontractor, Soule' Steel Company.*

*"Their attitude and cooperation in regard to safety was noteworthy and deserving of special commendation.*

*"It is gratifying to work with a subcontractor who displays the genuine safety concern demonstrated by the Soule' Steel foreman, Mr. Sonny Williams, and his crew.*

*"Again, I would like to compliment Soule' Steel Company on their safe performance during the erection of the Powerhouse warehouse building."*

In passing along the above letter, Melones Contractors added their appreciation . . . Bill Lucas (District Mgr.-Phoenix RF) served as moderator for a panel discussion before the Executives' Association of Greater Phoenix. Panelists familiar with all types of metal, i.e., sheet metal, machinery, forged, plates, flats, angles, aluminum, steel service centers and rebar gave short backgrounds of their respective companies, then fielded questions from the floor. Feedback from the Association indicated the program was very well received . . . Marvin DePoister (Detailer-Steel Bldgs., LA) has been re-elected Secretary-Treasurer for the Brentwood Optimist Club . . . Congratulations to Earl A. Neeb, Mgr.-Steel Mill Operations, Carson, on his election as Director of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. On January 1, 1977, Earl will begin a one-year term as a Director of the 12,000-member international technical society . . . Art Lindsay (Dir. ER-SF) has been appointed to membership in the Personnel Policies Forum for the Bureau of National Affairs . . . Karl Mellquist (Detailing Supvr.-Newark RF) served as a member on the WCRSI Reinforcing Detailing Problems Panel at the Central Division Fall Technical Seminar . . . John Crowhurst (Dist. Mgr/Det.-Sales-Steel Bldgs.-LA) was one of a panel of judges on July 4 for a Bicentennial Parade held in the City of La Palma, CA. John received a commemorative plaque for his services. Kelly Lange, TV newscaster for KNBC and occasional co-host for the "Today" Program for NBC, New York, was the parade Grand Marshall. "AU REVOIR"

Lou can now get away from it all, however, as he retired in July. He and his wife plan to do just that by traveling around the U.S.A. Apparently he will do some golfing also as Steel Mill employees presented him with a set of golf clubs at his retirement luncheon.*
