NEW FACILITIES FOR STEEL MILL PRODUCTS DIVISION

After twelve years, the Steel Mill Products Division has become a major factor in the Company's growth. This newest division in the company is expanding into more modern and efficient facilities.

The office and production facilities have moved from the Los Angeles plant to new quarters at the Carson mill. The fence post operation is located in the former rebar fab shop, with the new office next to it.

The Steel Mill Products Division goes back to 1964 when management decided to create a new division, primarily to manufacture and market merchant bars and studded "T" fence posts to take advantage of the mill's capacity. It was called the Special Products Division at that time.

They wisely selected George Ford, who was Vice President of Purchasing for the company, to head up the new division. His background in jobbing, mill operations and sales management made him an ideal choice.

He had the help of John Stockwell in Los Angeles, first as a salesman, and later as Sales Manager.

Now, John has been named Manager of the Steel Mill Products Division, in charge of the sales, planning, scheduling and shipping.

Other key office personnel are Rebecca Siegel, Clerk Typist; Charles Rountree, Production Scheduler and Inventory Controller. Stylianos "Lucky" Malamatenios is Forman of the fence post fab shop, reporting to Jack Dressen, Plant Manager at L.A.

The division markets studded "T" fence posts and accessories. The fence posts are sold through dealers and cooperatives throughout the West and all posts are made at the mill.

The studded "T" fence posts are straightened, cut in 5'6" to 10' lengths, painted and packaged for shipment in the fab shop. The new fence post production line is faster and more efficient with automated paint facilities in a below ground conveyor line. Water base paint is used instead of the former oil base type which contaminated the air.

Except for the automated paint line, the new fab line was engineered and put in place by the Soulé L.A. Industrial Engineering Department, which includes Bill Dillenbeck and Alan Soulé. Moving the operation from L.A. to Carson also gives the Buildings Division more fabrication space in the plant.

Soulé studded "T" fence posts can be seen throughout the West as snow markers and also strung with barbed wire keeping livestock at home on the range.

Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT

**Q.** My husband has dental insurance coverage through his company's group insurance. I am covered under the Soulé Salaried Employees Group Insurance Plan, and my husband is listed as a dependent. It is going to be necessary for him to have some very expensive work done, including dental surgery, crowns, and bridgework, and I was wondering if our plan would cover some of the dental expense that his plan will not pay.

**A.** Our Salaried Employee's Group Insurance Plan does provide what is commonly termed "coordination of benefits" for both medical and dental expense. Essentially, what this means is that in the event our coverage overlaps coverage afforded under any other prepaid plan (such as that provided by your husband's employer), there will be an adjustment of benefits to prevent any duplication. Your husband should have one of our dental claim forms completed, but he should submit a claim and all bills to his employer's carrier as the "prime" carrier. Our insurance carrier will then determine where our group plan takes over (after satisfaction of the annual deductible) and pay any benefits due you.

Phoenix Office Spruce-Up

New Fresno Office Opens

More than 100 guests were welcomed by Lee Soulé and Bob Gebauer, Fresno Office Manager, at an open house to show off the new Soulé building housing the new offices.

The new facility, pushed by Bob Gebauer from beginning to completion, replaces a dilapidated old structure and features a new hard top parking lot.

STEELING ATTENTION

**HO, HO, HO:** A jolly, rotund Santa was welcomed by a delighted group of 30 Soulé second and third generation kiddies. The occasion was the San Francisco So-So-Crats' 2nd Annual Kiddie Christmas Party. Santa's super-efficient elf, Vivian Rodriguez (Acctg-SF) organized the affair. She and Mike Rodriguez shopped for and wrapped the most appropriate gifts as well as the decorations and refreshments. Activities moved quickly and smoothly until the Piñata finale in the parking lot, where it was easy for the tired, happy tots to pile into cars for home. S-h-h-, don't tell anyone, but Santa looked suspiciously like Chuck Meekeel (Steel Bldgs-SF) . . .

The So-So-Crats also provided a lovely adult Christmas party at the Lake Merrit Hotel in Oakland. Dinner, dancing, and prizes galore . . . Salt Lake City enjoyed an informal Christmas buffet luncheon. Instead of a formal party, they collected over $200 from the office, shop, and field and donated toys, clothing and food to make a happy Christmas Eve for a needy family. Very thoughtful idea.

**Cactus Bowl Champions:**

The Barracudas (Mighty Mite Div.) ended the season the only undefeated team in the State of Arizona by beating the only other undefeated team, the Bandits. The Tom Shores Family (IW Forman-Phoenix) played an important role with 10-year-old Tommy #55 (almost his weight of 56 lbs.) as Nose-guard-Defense, Right Guard–Offense; and Cheerleader, Jeanie (age 8).

Laki Malamentios coaches the Jaguar Soccer team and his 8 year old son Dino is the outstanding forward. The Jaguars ages range from 7 and 8 year old boys, each boy was awarded a gold medal and the team received the Division Champion award, which composes all of the foothill area.

WOW! Fred Webster shot a 155-yard hole-in-one on the 13th hole at Birchhills Golf Course on February 1. Bet even the pros are jealous of that achievement.

Bassinet Set:

—Just in time for the income tax deduction on December 30 was Shannon Brown, new baby daughter of June and Jim Brown (RF-SLC) . . . 8 lbs. 3 oz. Jana Marie was born on January 4 to Michael and Vonnie Bannon (LA Acctg.) . . . Double the pleasure, double the fun for Sacramento Detailer Cesar Arcangel and his wife Linda. Born February 29 twin sons, Casey John and Bradley Dave, will only have a birthday every four years!

GRADUATE:

Robert E Canion II, son of Nelda Canion (Office-Phoenix) has graduated from Grand Canyon College, receiving his BA in Bible. This fall he will enroll in the Southwest Baptist Theological Institute in Ft. Worth, Texas. Robert is the Associate Pastor at the Twenty-seventh Avenue Baptist Church in Phoenix, having been licensed to preach in April of 1974.

In Phoenix on March 5 Pati Lucas, daughter of Dee and Bill Lucas (Dist. Mgr.-Phoenix) became the bride of Kenny Dye.

Look like country club living in Santa Ana? Pictured above at lunch time are: (l. to r.) With the high cost of gasoline to drive somewhere to pay for an expensive meal, they decided to pitch in and make their own lunches. Sometimes Mary Ferrell cooks up a "heartburn special" (she said it, I didn't) Mexican lunch. Thom Carter's special brainstorm was peanut butter and applesauce with turkey on multi-grain bread. The crew enjoys these lunchbunch changes of pace (believe it or not). All appliances, tables, plants, etc. were donated.

A cordial invitation is extended to drop in for lunch any time — always room for one more.

Brenda Heinrichs, 17, daughter of Walter Heinrichs, Reinforcing Div., Fresno, is Flag Girl with the unit. The band also presented concerts on the Capitol steps and in front of the White House. Many fund raising activities were presented to finance the trip.*

The American Red Cross has certified that the following personnel have completed the Standard Course "Multimedia System" of instruction in First Aid to the injured on February 23, 1976: C. Briones, R. Cope, M. Elmore, H. Enrico, J. Englert, C. Hooks, T. McCann, J. Minech, M. Ortiz, P. Provins, A. Ragone, V. Scott, E. Selleck, J. Rose, G. Duran. Governor Brown for Nuclear Power

*Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., according to the Sacramento Bee for October 1, 1975, in an appearance before the Building Trades Department of the AFL-CIO, answered a question on nuclear power as follows:*

"I think nuclear power is an inevitable development. I think it ought to be limited but I think we ought to move forward . . . in the places where it is the safest to build it. And I think it is a transition to a safer form of energy such as solar and nuclear fusion. I think that's the ultimate goal.

"But we're not going to get to that goal for 25 years and in the meantime we're going to have to build whatever it takes to provide the energy needs of a country growing like America.

"At the same time we better couple it with conservation . . . we cannot waste the amount of oil and the fuel that we're doing now.

"But definitely in the short term we need to build some plants and we ought to find out where we ought to best to build them and then go forward without the continual retrying of each case in six or seven different forums all along the line."

Two New Soulé V.P.'s

Howard Soulé has been named Vice President-Administration & Secretary for the company. He has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1959. Prior to being appointed Vice President, he was Corporate Secretary.

Don Watkins was elected Vice President-Finance & Treasurer at the Annual Stockholders and Board of Directors Meeting. He has been with Soulé for more than 23 years. Before his new appointment, he was Treasurer of the company. He is a National Director of the National Association of Accountants.
