IN LOS ANGELES

The Soule' Buildings Division is up to something - no doubt about it. Each location has posters, badges, and bumper stickers proclaiming in no uncertain terms, "I'M HELPING." Interest is high. The tempo is up. There is solid feeling of participation everywhere. Who is helping whom? Dealer-related personnel at all levels are helping Soule' dealers, of course! Recognizing that the success of our dealers depends a great deal on responsiveness, attention to detail and enthusiasm by Soule' people, a program designed to instill a cooperative spirit was initiated for a three-month period beginning November 10.

IN SAN FRANCISCO

The theme "I'M HELPING" was introduced with a series of small giveaways, plus the aforementioned badges and posters. Letters from George Ford outlined the importance of establishing cooperation as a guiding principle during 1978 for Corporate Management, Soule' Buildings personnel, and all employees involved in support functions such as Purchasing, Accounting, Credit, Plant, Employee Relations, etc.

Although difficult to measure directly, success of the program has been felt in the area of improved communications between departments internally and our dealer organization externally. The dealers have not been told of this effort as yet, however General Sales Manager Dick Marsellos and Sales Service Manager Don Moore report several comments from dealers indicating they have benefited directly by people putting forth the extra effort required in special cases.

Dealers will be informed of this program at the February Dealer Meeting in San Diego, and will be given an opportunity to see what was accomplished.

In the meantime, some Soule' Buildings Division New Year's Resolutions are: Keep that helpful spirit alive all through 1978. Provide Soule' dealers with that competitive edge that will make each of them NUMBER ONE in his territory.

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is a pleasure to be able, through SOULE' NEWS, to extend my best wishes for a very Happy New Year to all of you and your families.

On March 2, I will have completed one year as your President - a very interesting and educational one for me. To summarize a bit, it has been a year in which: ...our Company was able to remain strong and lively despite being adversely affected by heavy competition in both rebar and fence posts, despite heavy imports of foreign steel in our market, and despite two of our mini-steel mill competitors in the West going out of business; ...our Zamil - Soule' Joint Venture became firmly established. I, personally, was able to see the fruits of our work during a visit to Saudi Arabia in October. ...the Steel Buildings Division has had a progressive year. Its reorganization and various programs have been described in this and other issues of SOULE' NEWS; ...arrangements have been made with a local Joint Venture to buy our San Francisco property. You will be kept informed as this develops; ...we were able to obtain a $4 million loan from an insurance company for future expansion; ...and finally, it was a year in which we placed heavy emphasis on formal long-range planning. I am confident it will pay off by our attaining our financial objectives for the next five years, with strong growth and an excellent return on our investment.

So while it has been a difficult year in some respects, I am sure you'll agree we all have a great deal for which to be thankful. We appreciate your service and your loyalty, and with your continued help, look forward to a bigger and better 1978!

The poster read, "Where were you in 1952?" And while many of us would have to stop and think about it, undoubtedly six people knew immediately, because that is the year they started to work for Soule'. Certainly anything but "job hoppers," they have remained loyal and steady, and have now completed twenty-five years of service.

Dinner parties were given in San Francisco and Los Angeles for all members including retirees of this exclusive group, with the new members as the honored guests, Congratulations!

MEMORY GROVE PROJECT

In our Summer 1977 issue, we described the Utah Bicentennial project, Memory Grove and Perception Garden, to which Soule' donated reinforcing steel and labor.

Another feature of the Grove is a replica of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell, cast from the original template found in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in England. This bell, a Bicentennial gift to the people of Utah from the Beta Sigma Phi Service Sorority, will be placed in Memory Grove in a tower financed by funds raised by the school children of Utah.

The "Bell Float" pictured above further celebrates this project, and won First Place for State, Cities and Counties in the annual parade celebrating the Mormon Pioneers' entering the valley. The float also was displayed at the State Fair. The people of Utah are very proud of this project - and Soule' is happy to have had a small part in it, too!

PROJECT RESPONSE

With energy conservation still uppermost in everyone's mind today, Steel Buildings Management instituted a seminar entitled "Project Response." This will give sales personnel data and materials with which to approach architects to promote energy savings through the use of Soule' Steel Building concepts. Q. There has been a lot of talk about Social Security being in financial trouble and having to increase the amount deducted from our pay. How much are we going to have to pay?

A. Effective January 1, the Social Security tax deduction increased from 5.85% to 6.05%. The base annual salary or wages on which deductions are made also increased from $16,500 to $17,700. Under this new law, there are further increases in store in the years ahead. The tax rate will gradually rise from the present amount to 7.15% in 1987.

I know you are not too pleased at this increase, but neither is this happy news for the employer, because employers must also match the contribution of each of their employees, as has been the case since Social Security began in 1935. The law also establishes a new method for computing benefits. The new system is designed to provide a pension for the average worker equal to approximately 4% of earnings just prior to retirement.

We extend condolences to the families and friends of three retirees who passed away recently:

Ray Ferch, formerly Regional Erection Superintendent of Architectural Products Division, Seattle.

Gene Maier, formerly Die Shop Superintendent San Francisco plant.

John L. Edwards, formerly Contracts Coordinator for Architectural Products in San Francisco died on January 13, 1978.

The number of promotions and the realignment of responsibilities confirms the Company's policy of utilizing talent from within the organization whenever possible.

RETIRING

President Stan Soule' (r) said "Au revoir but not goodbye" to Reinforcing District Manager in Newark, T.O. Carroll, who retired after thirty-one years of company service. "T.O." will return on a special-assignment basis after May 1. In the meantime, having acquired a new travel trailer, he plans to tour the U.S. for a few months.

Jack Higbee is retiring after 16 years of Soule' service in the Accounting Department, L. A. He plans to live in Yucca Valley, and has many interesting hobbies to keep him busy: target shooting with modern rifles and pistols, shooting old fashioned black powder guns (he also reloads his own ammunition), fishing and photography. Jack also has travel plans in his future Vice-President, Don Watkins, (r) is pictured presenting Jack his service plaque as Assistant Secretary Jack Walker looks on.

President Stanley Soule' recently announced the promotion of Jack Simonson to Division Manager of Steel Mill Products. Jack will continue to receive guidance from Vice President George Ford until July 1, at which time he will report directly to the President, as do all Division Managers....

In a further effort to increase effectiveness in serving the Soule' Buildings dealer network, Vice President George Ford announced the following reassignments effective immediately. Reporting to General Sales Manager Dick Marsellos: Howard Rumrey, formerly Regional Sales Manager of the Central Region, who will take over the newly created position of Marketing Manager, Temp-Con. He will be responsible for developing the total marketing and sales strategies for this product. Howard will remain headquartered in San Francisco.

Bob Weyand, formerly Regional Sales Manager of the Southwest Region, has been promoted to Manager of Major Accounts and Direct Sales. In his new position, Bob will be responsible for direct sales in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. He will also be responsible for developing major accounts in all areas. On a Division-wide basis, all Sales Engineers will report to Bob in Los Angeles.

Bill Phillips, who was our National Accounts Manager and recently returned from assignment in the Mid-East, will assume the duties of Dealer Sales Manager. He will also be headquartered in Los Angeles.

Reporting to Bill Phillips will be Bob Thompson, Northwest Sales Manager, Portland.

Also in the Soule' Buildings Division, Dave Lorz has been assigned the responsibility of heading the District Estimating Department in Los Angeles. He will report to Kay Low, Chief Estimator.

In the Reinforcing Division, General Manager Warren Grundfor announced the appointment of Bill Duncan as acting District Manager—Newark.

STEELING ATTENTION MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS PAST - AND CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!

Judging by reports and photos received, Soule' people did, indeed, have a very Merry Christmas!

San Francisco started early, December 2, with a dinner dance at Forest Lodge, attended by sixty-five employees and guests.

Next came the So-So-Crats' Kiddie Party at the San Francisco office where Santa Claus himself visited nineteen Soule-related children and passed out gifts. A cake so beautiful it could only have been conjured up by Santa's helper disappeared as if by magic, along with punch and other festive goodies.

Although held during the holiday season, Phoenix Reinforcing billed their get-together as their "Second Annual Thank You Party." Cleverly worded invitations were sent to office, shop and field to attend a western hoedown at the "Handlebar J" and dance to the music of the "Country Score". Thirty-three responded and enjoyed an evening of "frivility, frivolity, fun, food, and festivity." (Sounds as if they had a good time, wouldn't y'say?)

The Los Angeles area's dinner dance was held at Rochelles on Saturday, December 18, and as the pictures indicate, a very good time was had by all.

BEWITCHED - Hallowe'en decor provided the background for a special luncheon to show moral and financial support to Pat Gilland. Pat, Credit Secretary in SF, has had a long recuperation following her auto accident, and there is still no definite date for her return to work. Those dreadful medical bills can really add up, so her many friends turned out to show how much they care. Pat's spirit has been indomitable, resulting in exceptional progress. To give you an idea, we think this photo of Pat with Lee Soule' at the So-So-Crats' Christmas Party says it all...

STEELING ATTENTION (CONTINUED)

UP, UP AND AWAY! Jack Walker (Acctg-Carson) and his wife, Maude, flew to the Philippines, Malaya, Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong for 17 days in October. They visited Jack's niece and her husband in Hong Kong, and reported the thrill of viewing the breathtakingly beautiful harbor. The Walkers felt this trip was both educational and enjoyable a never-to-be-forgotten experience...Not as exotic, perhaps, but a new experience nevertheless for L.A. RF Detailer Armando Lima, who has been working in Salt Lake City for three months. He looked forward to the snow, but very little fell UNTIL the day he went for his first ski lesson. So much was coming down then, that after a couple of runs, he sought the lodge, and spent the rest of his time watching "snowbunnies". Well, that can be nice scenery, too.

HERE COME THE BRIDES: Love came to Santa Ana, starting when Shelley Love came to Soule' about a year ago, and again when she and Thom Carter fell in love. They were recently married in the beautiful great outdoors, followed by a honeymoon in romantic Hawaii...

Jim Brown, RF Field Superintendent SLC, is happily spreading the news of his father's marriage on December 26 to Ruth Saunders of Los Angeles. Father, George Brown, was for many years an outside estimator for the L. A. office. Best wishes for happiness always to the newlyweds!....

DEER, DEER! Deer season was good for Soule' employees with most hunters successful in bringing home the venison. In Salt Lake, among office and shop personnel, Jim Brown, Hugh Bates, Dave Taylor, Gene Luna, Ken Thomson, Ron Wilberger, Dean Ottley and Val Fry each got one. Of this group, Ottley and Fry got the largest. It was the field that brought down the big ones, though, with Al Kerbs and Ray Parry, both field foremen bringing in 36" and 37" spread of horns. With the 37" rack, the boys collected about a thousand dollars worth of prizes...Sacramento RF Detailer "Bergie" Berghorst went hunting in Wyoming and brought down a Royal Elk with six points! Congratulations to all on their hunting prowess.

PUBLIC RELATIONS IN ACTION

Employees of the Carson facilities participated in a blood donor program. The American Red Cross provided a Bloodmobile which was located at the Steel Mill. Forty-three pints of blood were donated, and credited to the Soule' Steel Company Employees' Blood Bank.
