OLD WEST "COUNTRY STORES" REVISITED

J. ARTHUR LINDSAY APPOINTED VP-EMPLOYEE RELATIONS

Chairman Lee Soule' announced that at their March meeting, the Board of Directors elected J. Arthur Lindsay to Vice President-Employee Relations.

During his five years with the company, Art has introduced many innovations to Soule''s employee relations and to industry-related groups. Under his direction salary and benefit programs have been consistently monitored and updated to conform to industry and area standards. He is also very active in industrial relations, often working long hours in labor negotiations.

Art was born in Okemah, Oklahoma. He received his BBA degree from the University of Georgia, also doing graduate work there and at San Francisco State, and earning his MBA. He also served as S/Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Germany for 4 years.

Prior to joining Soule', Art was in personnel administration work at Argonaut and Fireman's Fund Insurance Companies, as well as owning and managing his own management consultant firm.

With the recent appointment of Jack Simonson to Division Manager of the Soule' Steel Mill Products Division, it seemed appropriate to focus on this division to see what is happening now, and what is planned. Jack is enthusiastic about the challenge offered in this highly competitive industry, and is traveling extensively to become acquainted with the many fine dealers representing Soule'. In doing so, he was transported back in memory to the "country store" concept of the old West by visiting the Country Stores, of the Albers Division of the Carnation Company. To many of us urban dwellers, Albers is an old friend whose colorful packages provided flapjack flours and cereals when we were growing up. Not so familiar is the fact that not too far distant there have been Albers stores offering feed and farm supplies.

Albers began in Portland, Oregon, in 1895 handling grain, feed (which was manufactured in a small feed mill), and staple groceries. Growing throughout the years, Albers expanded into Seattle and Tacoma with mills, and entered California in 1909 through the purchase of the Del Monte Milling Company in San Francisco.

In 1914, Albers acquired the Pacific Cereal Association business; and in 1929 merged with the Carnation Company, combining two of the largest food industries on the Pacific Coast. So since 1895, the Albers Milling Company has been supplying the feed needs of farmers, and has the largest number of dealers of any national feed company.

And what does this have to do with Soule'? It's really quite simple: Albers serves the needs of farmers . . . farmers need fencing. . . Soule' manufactures and distributes steel studded "T" fence posts. Albers was one of Soule' Steel's first customers in the fence post sales efforts, and we have had a good relationship for the past 15 years.

Albers is presently in the process of expanding their 42 Feed and Farm Supply Stores in the Western United States, and re-naming them "Country Stores". But if a vision looms of Lum and Abner's "Jot 'em Down Store" - forget it. In a modern and innovative move, they are refurbishing and revitalizing these stores. According to Wayne MacMillan, Albers General Manager of Store Operations, "We are using a slogan

SOULE' BUILDERS MEET AT RANCHO BERNARDO

More than 60 Soule' Building Dealers and company personnel gathered at the Inn at Rancho Bernardo in San Diego recently for the company's annual builder meeting. The three-day conference was designed to help dealers improve the quality of their business and professional lives, as well as to impart new information on Soule' Building Systems.

The program was conducted by Gene Fuller, Manager-Dealer Development, under the overall direction of Richard T. Marsellos, General Manager-Domestic Operations. The opening address was given by Vice President George Ford. During the seminars, builders were counseled on Cash Flow Management by Professor David Rush of the University of Colorado, and on Time Management by professional counselor Lewis Timberlake. The final seminar, attended by both builders and their wives, was led by Chris Christianson, nationally recognized authority on Management by Motivation.

Always a "highlight" is the annual awards banquet. This year President Stan Soule' was the featured speaker.

Recipients of the company's coveted "Dealer of the Year" awards were: Engineered Structures of San Diego, California; W.W. Wilson Company of Sacramento, California; and R. R. Tydings, Inc. of Auburn, Washington. Dealers responsible for the "Buildings of the Year" were Hank Heuvel Builders, Inc., Fairbanks, Alaska; Romac Pacific Company, Inc., San Rafael, California; and Wallace & Smith, Bakersfield, California.

As is customary, a complete schedule of ladies activities was planned each day under the direction of Rosalie Kotch. Included were trips to Tijuana, Mexico; the Scripps Oceanographic Institute; and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

ORGANIZATION MOVES

DICK MARSELLOS

To complete the reorganization of the Steel Buildings Division, President Stanley Soule' announced the appointment of Dick Marsellos as General Manager, Domestic Operations.

Dick will have responsibility for all operations and departments in the Division with the exception of International Sales. This includes Production, Purchasing and Product Department Managers in addition to those departments previously reporting to him.

MARVIN DEPOISTER

Marvin DePoister has been given the responsibilities of Acting Detailing Supervisor, Steel Buildings-Los Angeles, reporting to Alex Tounian.

PUBLIC RELATIONS IN ACTION

Vice President George Ford was recently elected to the Metal Building Manufacturers Association Executive Committee. . . Carson Steel Mill Operations Manager Sandy Soule' moderated a symposium of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers in Los Angeles on March 7. The subject discussed was "Maintenance and the Profit Dollar." Panel members were: Bob Carothers, Kaiser Steel Corp.; Herb Kossoff, U.S. Steel Corp., and Al Villalobos, Bethlehem Steel Corp.

Employee Relations SPOTLIGHT

Q. Recently, one of our guys who was seriously ill needed several pints of blood, and didn't know about the Soule' Blood Bank Account on which he could have drawn. I think you should let everyone know more about this and how it works.

A. Soule' Blood Bank Accounts are available at all of our larger locations and several of our smaller ones. This is the way it works: If an employee or member of his family has required blood, the Employee Relations Department should be contacted, giving the name of the individual and the hospital. They, in turn, can order the release of the necessary number of units or pints which will be credited to the patient's account. Because blood is such a vital resource, it is always requested that the blood be replaced so insurance plans do not normally cover the cost. Being able to draw on the Soule' Blood Bank Account cancels any charge for the blood itself which the patient would have had to pay. For more information, just contact the Employee Relations Department at your location.

And when the mobile unit comes for the next donor drive, please sign up so we will always have enough in our account to meet any emergency.

IN MEMORIAM

It is with regret that we announce the death on January 12 of William B. Tyler, former Director of Soule' Steel Company. Very active and respected in the community, Bill served on our Board for eighteen years.

'Much, much more than a feed store' to let people know that we now offer, in addition to our usual product line, a full line of paints, clothing and boots, wallpaper, garden needs of all kinds, pet foods and accessories, housewares, automotive, hardware, plumbing and electrical supplies . . . plus tack and riding equipment (in a room puckishly call 'The Tack Shelter'), and last but not least, Soule' Studded "T" Fence Posts.

Mr. MacMillan recently stepped into the shoes of retiring Robert M. "Bob" Johnson, who capably and brilliantly managed feed store operations for 29 years. During Mr. Johnson's tenure, Albers "old-fashioned feed stores" developed into modern general feed and farm supply businesses using the latest in marketing techniques.

According to Division Manager Jack Simonson, "We are proud and pleased with our ever-growing relationship with Albers in our steel studded "T" fence post operation, and feel that the past 15 years of growth will be repeated over and over in the future."

We have spotlighted Albers however we are most appreciative of the efforts of all Fence Post dealers, large and small, who represent us so ably throughout the West. We are also looking forward to establishing new dealerships in areas not presently covered so that wherever fencing is needed, Soule''s quality product will be available.

NEW PRODUCT TASK FORCE

On March 7, 1978, our newly formed 'New Product Task Force' held their first instructional meeting in Los Angeles. The team consists of Jack Simonson, Verne Freer, George Halgedahl, Jim Lucenti, Sam Stewart, Bill Furst, Glen Gross, Scott Anderson, and Chairman Lowell Carstensen.

The members were briefed on their mission to contribute ideas for a new product to expand our business into new areas.

If you would like to contribute your ideas to the Task Force, please contact any member of the committee listed above, and they will explain the guidelines for seeking new products. If it is not convenient to contact one of the team members, send your suggestion to the Chairman in San Francisco.

The first meeting was enthusiastically supported by all participants, with good discussion and very helpful suggestions. We will keep you up to date on the progress of this committee.

STEELING ATTENTION

On February 3, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Tounian (SB-SF) welcomed a son, Michael, 8 lbs. 8 ozs.

GET WELL WISHES TO:

Louie Grimes (RF-Fresno) who suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident. Glad to have Jo Gould (RF-Fresno) back after her two month confinement due to a broken shoulder suffered in a fall. . .

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL:

With many State offices to be filled in California this year, political candidates are everywhere. Speaking at a Soule' Management Committee luncheon recently was one of the candidates for Attorney General, Jim Browning. Best known for his successful prosecution of the Patricia Hearst case which he conducted in a low-key manner, Jim Browning proved to be a most interesting, dynamic speaker.

Affairs, and Mensa. Along with his wife, Willa, he is active in Development Center for Handicapped Minors.

Art and Willa have two sons, two daughters, and two grandchildren. When time permits, Art plays the guitar and sings - often songs of his own composition.

After twenty-three years with the Detailing Department of the Steel Buildings Division, Walter Rosneek retired on March 14. Co-workers honored him at a dinner where he was presented with a retirement certificate hand-created for him especially by Tarco Diaz. The certificate read "Junior Drafters University - Dr. Walter Rosneek," a tribute to his fine instruction to young draftsmen through the years.

Many, many happy years of retirement, Walter!
