SOULÉ REBAR: ITS VITAL ROLE IN THE WEST'S SKYLINE

The Reinforcing Steel Division, Soule's largest and oldest division, virtually started at the time Mr. Edward L. Soule, Sr., founded the company in 1911. Following the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, he pioneered the use of reinforcing bars to help rebuild the backbone of the devastated City's buildings, and Soule Steel developed as a result of his success with that new and innovative product.

Then as today, "rebar" plays a vital role in our company and in construction throughout the West. Landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Arco Twin Towers, the Hearst Castle at San Simeon, the Salk Institute in San Diego, the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas, and the North Temple Viaduct in Salt Lake City, are just a few of Reinforcing Steel Division's major projects in assisting the development of the skyline of the West.

Although Soule Steel purchased all of its reinforcing bar from other sources prior to 1959, it now produces its own reinforcing bar at Soule's mill in Carson, California, starting with scrap through to the finished reinforcing bar at its mini mill located in the city of Carson.

The Reinforcing Steel Division is under the direction of Robert J. Gebauer, General Manager. Bob, a veteran employee of the company, started with its Los Angeles Engineering Office in October of 1953. At a later date and in the following order, he became district manager at Fresno, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. When the company divisionalized all of its

sales products, Craig Carpenter became Reinforcing's first division manager (see Soule News December 1964). Its second division manager was Warren P. Grundfor (Soule News, Summer 1975).

Subsequently, Bob Gebauer became Reinforcing's present division manager, operating from the division's new headquarters office located next to the former Carson Fabrication Facility. The Carson Fab Shop is presently being leased and used by a neighboring company in Carson.

Bob is ably assisted by his new secretary Pattie Norton, the Carson Engineering Supervisor Leonard Diyco, Reinforcing Mill Stock-Product Manager Glenn Gross, Carson Senior Estimator Herb Covey, and Roustabout Supervisor Lou Richer.

In addition to the headquarters office at Carson, the division has district fabrication facilities in Fresno, Newark, Salt Lake, Sacramento, and Phoenix. Each district is responsible for estimating, detailing, fabrication, and field erection of reinforcing bars. The major personnel in each district are:

Fresno: District Manager is Walt Heinrichs, with Estimating Supervisor Ben Wilkes, Fabrication Foreman Jim Kirk, and District Field Foreman Bob Fain.

Newark: District manager is Jim Soulé, with

Estimating Supervisor Harold Knox, Detailing Supervisor Karl Mellquist, Fabrication Foreman Free Babcock, and District Field Foreman L.J. ("Nunny") Pagan.

Salt Lake City: District Manager is Jerry Silva, with Estimating/Detailing Supervisor Hugh Bates, Fabrication Foreman Eugene Luna, and District Field Foreman Jim Brown.

Sacramento: District Manager is Dick Lewis, with Detailing Supervisor Keith Gates, Estimating Supervisor Frank McLaughlin, and District Field Foreman Don Beaty.

Phoenix: District Manager is Bill Lucas, with Estimating/Detailing Supervisor Ray Ricks, Fabrication Foreman Mike Schenfeld, and District Field Foreman John Cundiff.

The Manager of Stressing and Special Projects, located in San Francisco, is Scott Anderson.

The Reinforcing Division is presently making a special effort in the following areas: concentrating on the sale of straight-length rebar in the Southern California area, and promoting the sale of carbon and alloy steel products (being rolled at our mill in Carson) to non-construction customers.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF STEEL

This Spring a group of employees visited the Steel Buildings Division and the Carson Mill as part of an informational tour to familiarize them with the products they knew by name only. No words could describe their "thrill of seeing that molten steel pouring out of the ladle . . . being poured into billets, and then put into the reheat furnace for future use as rebar, etc." The group was composed of (left to right) Dale Cluse, Lee Keller, Carol Marty, Jerry Orrison, Jeanne Pottle, Stephen Illencik, Sabrina Herendon, Wm. Bjorkquist, Sam Moon, Sandy Malgren, and Evelyn Greig. Their combined thanks go to Rosalie Kotch, Dale Cluse, Pete Soule, Sandy Soule, and John Rogachenko for making it a memorable day.

VACATION NOTES FROM ALL OVER . . .

Vacation Skeds: Hope the gas shortage doesn't cancel these Sacramento office's vacations: The Ken Blythes will visit family in Ohio and Colorado. . . the Pete Tampas will enjoy Texas. . . The Cesar Arcangels plan Disneyland and San Diego. . . the Leon Marlarls will spend ten sunny days in Mexico. . . and Carol Ebdrup will help welcome her new grandbaby in Grand Junction, Colorado.

What Gas Shortage?: Yvonne Kissinger of San Francisco office had no problem on her vacation to New Mexico.

Hi Y'All: Wilson Ringer of the San Francisco office toured the Deep South on his vacation, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge (with its 35-story hi-rise capitol the tallest in the United States), and Natchez on his itinerary. His dining experiences in the New Orleans' French Quarter will long be remembered. He recommends Commander's Palace, Gallatoire's, Broussard's, and Brennan's (but make reservations for the last a week in advance).

Happy Anniversary: Carol Marty, Corporate Office Secretary, knows how to celebrate: A five-week trip to Europe with her husband to mark their 25th wedding date. Visits to relatives in Sweden and Switzerland highlighted the celebration.

Way To Go: Lee Stockon (Advertising, Los Angeles) cruised to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on the TSS Festival for a seven-day glorious vacation (a la Love Boat?). What memories!

Fore!—Yes, four courses: Fresno, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, and Sherwood Forest—were covered in a golfing spree by Al Parret (Fresno Detailer) and Ben Wilkes (Fresno Estimating and Engineering Supervisor) in May—satisfying for the time being their enthusiastic pursuit of the little white ball. Ben was also one up in the recent Palm Lake Champions' Tournament. Congrats!

It was "Hello, Vegas, Hello" when Soule Steel's Division's annual meeting of builders and sales personnel met in "Fun City" for two action-packed days in April. A special program for the ladies guaranteed their enjoyment and a program with a "cast of hundreds" for the men detailed stars, supporting stars, guest stars, supporting roles, and understudies. An awards banquet was an appropriate finale to two days of fun and friendships.

**Promoted:** Marvin de Poister was promoted to Order Entry Engineering Supervisor of the Buildings Division. He will have responsibility for all detailing and drafting functions for the Division in L.A.

**Spot Light:** Phoenix welcomes new Engineering Clerks Belinda Davis (left), Lauriaine Freeman, and Estimator Peter Schlegel, a transfer from the Ventura Office.

**New Supe:** Carson welcomes Ed Shaban, new Cost Accounting Supervisor, who transferred from San Francisco to Carson's Accounting Office.

**New To You:** Prem Ludwig, from the Fuji Islands, George S. Ford's new secretary at San Francisco.

**Champ:** Brad Cole transferred to Salt Lake from the San Diego office, bringing with him the Soulé bowling team's league championship trophy. Brad was with Soulé for 11 years in San Diego, and prior to that was in Soulé's Detailing Department in Portland.

**Girl Grad:** Cori Weeklyn, Sacramento part-time tage writer, graduated from American Legion H.S. in June. Congrats!

**Movin' Up:** Carol Ebdrup is a transfer from Carson Reinforcing to Sacramento Reinforcing. Carol's been with Soulé for 23 years. . .

**New Face:** Marina Kimura has joined the office force in Fresno as a Tag Writer in the Engineering Department. Her favorite hobbies are bowling and volleyball.

**Transfer:** Manny Regalado, Detailer from Carson, moved up to Fresno in the Reinforcing Division. A three-year veteran with Soulé, Manny relaxes by painting oils and watercolors when he isn't fishing.

**Promoted:** Gene Hopcus has been promoted to order Entry Engineering Supervisor, responsible for all drafting and detailing work for the Domestic Operation in the Soulé Buildings Division.

**New Detail:** Detailing Department in Fresno's new face is Alice Mumm with the position of Tag Order Clerk, going full-time after being part-time since '76. Off hours Alice hikes and camps.

MERGERS

**Lost:** Three eligible bachelors in Sacramento: Jeff Penick (Shop), Andy Souza (Shop), and Larry Howell (Field) have joined the ranks of the happily married. Congratulations all!

**Summer Knot:** Lewis Grimes, an experienced helper in the Fresno Fab Shop (where his father, Jerry Grimes, also works), is engaged to Laura Lynn Johnson of Clovis. The wedding will take place in August.

**All Tied Up:** Sylvan P. Selig, who retired from Soulé in San Francisco in 1970, married Lil Delucci in February of this year. Enjoy your cruise on the sea of matrimony!

MISCELLANY...

**Strike:** Jan Stannard proudly displays the trophy her bowling team won for second place in the Women's Telco Winter League. Jan is secretary of the Fresno Sales Department, and also serves as secretary treasurer of the League.

**Elected:** The CRSI (Concrete Steel Reinforcing Institute) elected Bob Gebauer president of the Southern Division for the 1979-80 term. Bob says he is happy to serve this group, "As the industry has been very good to me. . . and I am glad to be able to give something back to it."

**VIP Visit:** Oxnard Dealer Nick Moisius visited the Los Angeles Office for warehouse projects discussions with Lee Soulé and John Crowhurst.

**Dean's List:** Diane Sledge (Nurse, Los Angeles) is proud of her son, Darnell Felton, who made the Dean's List again at Marshall University in Huntington, West VA. Darnell's biography will appear in the National Dean's List book.

**Stage Debut:** Charla Parret, daughter of Al Parret, Detailer in Fresno, was her Dad's pride and joy on May 12, in her first ballet as the cutest hedgehog in Alice in Wonderland.

**Grandpop:** Harold Knox, Estimator, Newark, announced the arrival of his first grandson, Jason Andrew Downing, who weighed in at 9 lbs. Congrats!

**Poppa:** Edmundo Perez (Steel Building, Los Angeles), is the proud Pop of James Albert Perez, who weighed in at 8 lbs., 1 oz. Where's the picture, Pop?

**Grandmother:** Marilynyn Beale of San Francisco's International Department welcomed her first granddaughter, Christine Renee Spencer, on May 7—and wants the world to know! Christy's adopted aunt, Pat Nay, is Purchasing Agent for Zamil-Soulé.

**Sibling:** A daughter, Diane Elizabeth, to Nancy and Jimmy Ely (Ironworker, Fresno). Diane weighed in at 9 lbs., 6 oz.

**Twofor:** For Bob Fain, Field Superintendent, Fresno. He became a grandpa twice in April: Patrick Scott Montgomery and Jesse Matt Middleton.

WITH A DEEP SENSE OF LOSS. . .

IN MEMORIAM A Man People Could Count On . . . "If my father had a project he wanted done, he would always go to Niles Millar," Howard Soule recalled upon the death at age 86 of Niles O. Millar, a Soule employee in San Francisco from 1920 until his retirement in 1964.

From office manager, Millar climbed the corporate ladder to become Corporate Secretary and General Credit Manager of the company. His death leaves a void that can never be filled.

Congratulations!--Khalid Al Zamil, President of Zamil-Soulé announced that the Ministry of Industry and Electricity Award was made to Soulé's Saudi division. In his memorandum to all employees, Mr. Zamil said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for your contribution of hard work and effort. We should look forward for next year and hope to be honoured with the ultimate award of 'H. M. King Khalid Model Factory.' That could be only achieved by our consistent devotion and determination. We will get there! !!"

REPORT FROM WHERE THE WILD WINDS BLOW: GUAM

Guam--Al Hotard worked with the salesmen and engineers of Soulé representative Atkins Kroll Company, conducting training seminars for the salesmen and engineers. He also toured the island to check on Soulé buildings which survived several maximum wind velocity typhoons. (Guam building codes require that buildings be designed to withstand steady winds of 155 mph (80 lbs per square foot), which accounts for gusts of 200 mph.) Did you bring back some testimonials, Al?
