32 Builder's Organizations Represented at Hawaii Dealer Meeting
Soulé Steel Buildings' annual dealer meeting complete with flower drop and luau was held in Hawaii March 10-12 at the Kauai Surf Hotel. The three-day conference followed the theme "Profit from Paradise," to show how changes and developments at Soulé are making the builders' job easier and more profitable.

The meeting was conducted by Gene Fuller, Soulé Manager of Dealer Development, with the opening address given by Edward Lee Soulé, Jr., Chairman of the Board. Mr. Soulé greeted the builders, discussed some of Soulé plans for the coming year and outlined the schedule of the three-day program. Presentations by various Soulé management personnel discussed current activity in Computer Services, Sales Service, Engineering, Manufacturing and Marketing Services departments.
Dr. Jim Tunney, President of the Institute for the Study of Motivation and Achievement and a noted National Football League referee, led a morning seminar on employee motivation and improving the organizational environment. The discussion, entitled "Here's to the Winners," gave builders ideas on how to improve their personal and business lives.
Highlighting the conference was Soulé's annual awards banquet hosted by William Phillips, General Manager for the Buildings Division, to honor the accomplishments of Soulé builders during 1979.

Institutional Building of the Year
An Educational Center in St. Bernadines Hospital in San Bernadino, California, won the award for "Institutional Building of the Year." Because of the adjacent hospital, a recessed equipment well was designed into the roof which allows all air conditioning equipment to be installed and remain hidden, flush with the roof. Specially textured panels were used so that the exterior was perfectly matched to that of the Hospital building itself which used decorative panels from Belgium. This unique building was constructed by Hallanson Corporation, Riverside, California.
Carl Brooks, Inc. Receives Soulé President's Award
Los Angeles, California Soulé Steel Buildings' prestigious "President's Award," was presented to Carl Brooks, Inc. of Long Beach, California at Soule's annual dealer meeting by President Stanley Soulé.
The "President's Award" is designed to honor the builder who maintains the highest standard of business conduct and who shows overall excellence in his performance as a Soulé builder. Carl Brooks, Inc. has been a Soulé builder for 12 years and has provided their market area with Soulé buildings that are innovative in both design and construction.
The company is located at 1366 Coronado Avenue in Long Beach, California and part of the City of Long Beach.

"Builders of the Year" Honored in Three Market-size Categories
Commercial Industries Company, Inc. of Bellevue, Washington received the "Builder of the Year" award for sales in an area with a population of over 500,000.
"Builder of the Year" Awards are given annually to Soulé builders making outstanding sales and marketing efforts. Builders are chosen in three categories, based on total area populations of under 200,000 people, populations between 200,000 and 500,000 and in areas with a population of over 500,000. The awards were presented by Division General Manager Frank Burke.

Soulé presented its "Builder of the Year" Award to Roberts Construction Company of San Jose, California in recognition of the company's position as sales leader in a geographical area with a population between 200,000 and 500,000. Roberts Construction Company is located at 21140 Almaden Road in San Jose, California 95120 and serves Santa Clara county.
Rarig Construction of Cayucos, California was named "Builder of the Year" for sales in a geographical market area with a population of under 200,000. This is the second consecutive year that Rarig Construction has earned the "Builder of the Year" Award in their market-size category. Rarig Construction is located at 21 Luceren Road in Cayucos, California 93430 and serves the county of San Luis Obispo and parts of Santa Barbara county.

Good Sports Win Big In Golf, Tennis

Although scores did not necessarily show it, the competition was enthusiastic in both golf and tennis during the recent Builder Meeting.
It may have been the unusual wind and rain or it may have been the young hula-skirted assistants at the first tee. In any event the first few holes of the Kauai Surf course were played rather raggedly, at best, by all foursomes.
The final tally showed Jim Smith of CB Construction as winner of the award for the Low Net Score. Winner of the Low Gross Award was Loren Seibel of the Ted A. Molfino organization.
On the tennis courts, water-soaked tennis balls became a convenient excuse for poor play, thanks to atypical Hawaiian weather. The winners of the mixed doubles award, who toughed it out and defeated Soulé and builder competitors alike, were Rich and Eleanor Chattin of Construction Fasteners.
Hawaii Dealer Meeting

The meeting was scheduled Monday through Wednesday which allowed participants to spend a long weekend relaxing in Hawaii. Additional activities, including a river cruise, Hawaiian luaus and both tennis and golf tournaments were hosted by Soulé.
George Ford Retires After Nearly 35 Years
George S. Ford, Vice President/Foreign Operations and for many years General Manager of the Buildings Division, retired on April 30 after nearly 35 years service with the company.
Ford's association with Soulé Steel began in 1945 when, as a Navy Lieutenant assigned to the Bureau of Ships at the Pentagon, he first met founder Edward L. Soulé, Sr. At Soule's suggestion Ford joined the firm in 1946 as purchasing agent at Soulé Steel's old San Francisco, California headquarters.
Ford served as Manager of the company's jobbing department from 1950 and as Manager of Purchases from 1956. In 1961 he was named Vice President of Purchasing. While serving in this capacity Ford assumed the additional duties of Divison Manager/Special Products Division and General Manager/Buildings Division.
Shortly after taking over the buildings division, the structure housing Ford's San Francisco offices was named in his honor. Known to this day as the Ford Building, it typifies the Soulé buildings that are now increasingly found throughout the West.
In 1971 Ford was elected to Soulé Steel's board of directors. He was assigned complete responsibility for operation and management of the company's international joint venture in Saudi Arabia with Abdulla H. Al-Zamil & Sons in 1976.
A native of Belmont, Massachusetts, Ford is a 1937 graduate of Harvard University. During his career at Harvard he captained the hockey team and was subsequently named to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1939.
Ford and his wife, the former Betty Pedrick, have three children and five grandchildren. Following Ford's retirement, the couple plans to divide their time between their Meno Park residence and a summer home in Pebble Beach.
Ford was honored by fellow employees at a commemorative dinner on April 25 at Borel's Restaurant in San Mateo, California. The company also hosted a retirement banquet on May 1 at the World Trade Club in San Francisco.

Million Dollar Sales Awards

Two construction firms received Soule's "Outstanding Sales" Awards in the $1 million category for 1979. The awards were presented to Commercial Industries Company, Inc., Bellevue, Washington and Granville/Black Construction Company, Glendale, California by Sales Manager Bill Phillips.

Builders recognized for "Outstanding Sales" in the $500,000 category for 1979 at Soulé Steel Buildings' annual dealer meeting were: Carl Brooks, Inc., Long Beach, California; Delcon Associates, Inc., Hayward, California and Roberts Construction Company, San Jose, California.
The "Outstanding Sales" Awards presented by Sales Manager Bill Phillips, were given to those Soulé Builders who achieved sales totals in the two categories of $500,000 and $1,000,000 during the past year.

Industrial Building of the Year
Winner for 1979 was the facility for Mack Western Division of Mack Trucks, Inc. in Hayward, California. This project, consisting of six separate structures, totals well over 200,000 sq. ft. and qualifies as the largest truck assembly facility west of the Mississippi. The layout of the complex makes further expansion easy and provides Mack Trucks, Inc. with a group of practical and cost effective buildings. The Mack Truck project was designed and constructed by Delcon Associates, Inc. of Hayward, California.
Commercial Building of the Year
In this category, the refrigerated building at Hahn Distributing in Fairfield, California was selected for 1979. The Hahn facility uses Soulé Temp-Con insulated wall panels for the basic construction plus batting insulation for overhead surfaces. The Desertone finish, matching facia panels and stucco-finished office results in an attractive building located at the junction of two busy freeways. The Soulé builder repsonsible is Romac Pacific Company, Inc., San Rafael, California.

New 2½" Temp-Con® Panel Heads Product Development Announcements
News of several significant product developments were announced to the builders in Hawaii, as well as review of new engineering department procedures. The most important news was the availability of Temp-Con 250, a new 2½" insulated panel.
This new size Temp-Con will provide the R19 insulation rating so often required today at a more competitive price than the present 3" panel. Temp-Con 250 will of course have the same fire-resistant and vermin-proof characteristics as all other thicknesses and will be available in the same colors and lengths up to 30 feet.
Along with 2" Temp-Con, the new 2½" panel will allow builders to effectively compete in the expanding market for well insulated buildings. The new product will be available for order in June with anticipated delivery in July.
Another announcement at the meeting was that of the discontinuance of "Goldline" trim and gutter as a standard product. Instead, white and Aztec Bronze will be available in the same configuration, to be called "Whiteline"™ and "Bronzeline."™ Both new colors will be more easily produced and give builders a better selection of trims, more compatible with current earth tone colors. "Goldline" will remain available on a special-quotation basis, however.
A new facia system was also introduced, which involves fewer pieces for easier erection. In addition, the new system will handle heavier fascia panels and will accommodate both sloped and vertical configurations. Price book pages and product details on all of these new developments are expected to be available in July.
Aircraft Building of the Year
The Fluor Aircraft Hangar at the Ontario International Airport, Ontario, California was selected 1979 "Aircraft Builing of the Year." It measures 180 x 180 feet includes 9,000 sq. ft. devoted to office space. A large sliding door allows aircraft to enter and exit the facility with ease and also provides protection against the elements. The building was constructed by Granville/Black Construction Company of Glendale, California.
12 Builders Earn Sales Quota Awards
"Sales Quota Awards" for 1979 were presented to 12 Soulé builders located in states of Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona and Hawaii.
Don Plack, Manager of Dealer Sales, made the presentations. "Sales Quota Awards" are given annually to those Soulé builders who meet or exceed their sales quotas for the previous year. This years' winners were: Alma Building Contractors, Mesa, Arizona; Building Structures, Inc., Boring, Oregon; Commercial Industries Company, Inc., Bellevue, Washington; Delcon Associates, Inc., Hayward, California; Hallanson Corporation, Riverside, California; Rarig Construction, Cayucos, California; Roberts Construction Company, San Jose, California; Romac Pacific Company, Inc., San Rafael, California; Rosewall & Sons, Watsonville, California; S & M Welding, Ltd., Honolulu, Hawaii; Ted A. Molfina, Builder, Lodi, California and Wallace & Smith, Bakersfield, California.
